PhD Position in Experimental Hematology

Leipzig University Hospital

Leipzig, Germany

The Department of Hematology and Cell Therapy (Director: Prof. Uwe
Platzbecker) in the Medical Clinic and Policlinic I, Leipzig University Hospital,
invites applications for a

PhD Position in Experimental Hematology

to carry out functional characterization of the bone marrow extracellular matrix in myelodysplastic syndromes. The position is available for 2 years in the first instance and is funded by a grant from the José Carreras Foundation to Professor Platzbecker and PD. Dr. Manja Wobus.

Interactions between hematopoietic cells and the bone marrow stroma drive the development of myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS). The extracellular matrix plays an important role in this context, but the mechanisms remain poorly understood. This project will investigate the biochemical composition and functional properties of extracellular matrix generated by stromal cells isolated from the bone marrow of patients and controls in order to define key determinants of disease progression and to identify novel therapeutic targets.

The successful applicant will have:
• a degree (master or equivalent) in biology, biochemistry or a related discipline
• experience in cell and molecular biology and/or biochemical analysis
• a genuine interest in hematology and cancer research
• a good command of spoken and written English

Above all, we are looking for a dedicated and talented individual with the ability
to work constructively as part of a team.

Applications should be submitted directly to Prof. Dr. Uwe Platzbecker,
(uwe.platzbecker@medizin.uni-leipzig.de) and must include: a cover letter
including a brief description of previous research experience and your
motivation for applying for this position; your curriculum vitae with a list of
publications; a certified copy of your degree certificate; the contact details
of two referees.

The closing date for the receipt of applications is March 31st, 2019

Female applicants are encouraged to apply and will be given preference in cases of equal aptitude, ability, and professional achievements unless there are exceptional reasons for choosing another applicant.
Applications from suitably qualified severely disabled persons or disabled persons regarded as being of equal status according to Book IX of the German Social Legal Code (SGB – Sozialgesetzbuch) are encouraged.
