PhD-Student (f/d/m) in the field of mathematical modeling of minerals processing (flotation)

A member of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centers, the HZDR employs about 1,100 people. The Center's focus is on interdisciplinary research in the areas energy, health, and matter.

The Helmholtz Institute Freiberg for Resource Technology (HIF) pursues the objective of developing innovative technologies for the economy so that mineral and metalliferous raw materials can be made available and used more efficiently and recycled in an environmentally friendly manner.

As part of the Institute, the Department of Modelling and Valuation, invites applications as PhD Student (f/m/d) in the field of mathematical modeling of minerals processing (flotation).

The position will be available from 1 June 2019, provided that the funds will be approved. The employment contract is limited to three years.

In the framework of an EU-Project addressing fine particle flotation, we seek a qualified engineer, physicist or applied mathematician for the task of modelling certain aspects of this process. Flotation is a complex process for fine particle separation in minerals processing involving various physical, chemical and stochastic aspects, which will be addressed in an interdisciplinary team.

Tasks:

execution of the tasks of a modelling workpackage in an EU funded Project for fine particle flotationmulti-scale modeling of fine particle flotation in cooperation with experts in various aspects of the process, from particle to flow-sheetdevelopment and execution of experiments for the parametrization of these modelscomputer implementations of such modelsinterdisciplinary exchange with other experts within the corresponding EU-project and beyond in relevant conferences and journal publicationspublication and presentation of results (e.g. in international conferences and scientific journals)

Requirements:

very good university degree (Master/Diploma) in engineering (e.g. process engineering, computational engineering), applied mathematics or physicsmotivated to work as a scientistMathematics is for you a way to describe realitybasic understanding of fluid dynamics, the physics of interfaces, and minerals procesingexperience in programmingyou are open to work in an interdisciplinary and international environmentyour English is fluent in word and writing.
