Research Data Manager
MRC University Unit for Human Genetics
£33,199 – £39,609
Fixed term for 36 months
The Institute of Genetics and Molecular Medicine (IGMM; http://www.igmm.ac.uk/) at the University of Edinburgh has an exciting opportunity for an experienced, highly motivated research bioinformatician to play a core role in our data management strategy. The post holder will have a critical role in medically relevant scientific discoveries: coordinating, managing, and analysing large genomic and other datasets across different disease cohorts. They will be responsible for ensuring the effective management, integrity and security of IGMM research data, working closely with other bioinformatics, IT and research staff. The scale of biomedical research data production is accelerating, much of it is sensitive, and presents new challenges for data governance, as we balance the need for data security against the requirements for analysis.
The IGMM constitutes one of the largest aggregates of human molecular genetics and biomedical research capacity in the UK with over 70 Principal Investigators and 500 staff and PhD students. The successful applicant will join the IGMM Bioinformatics Analysis Core, which contributes computational expertise to collaborative projects with IGMM scientists, and also forms an important link between academic and NHS colleagues, as well as the Edinburgh Genomics (http://genomics.ed.ac.uk/) high throughput sequencing facility and the Edinburgh Clinical Research Facility (https://www.edinburghcrf.ed.ac.uk/). They will work from the state of the art Systems Medicine building at IGMM, designed around our thriving community of computational biologists.
The post offers an excellent opportunity to work with a variety of distinguished IGMM scientists on a range of cutting edge research problems. It would suit a biologist with excellent bioinformatics/computing skills or a computer scientist with a strong interest in biomedicine. Good project management, organizational, and interpersonal skills are essential.
