Lecturer: Metamorphic Petrology

The Department of Earth Sciences at Stellenbosch University is responsible for teaching and research in the fields of geology and environmental geochemistry. The department is equipped with modern analytical and experimental facilities and has a dynamic and international research team. Further information on departmental staff and research activities, students, analytical facilities and funding opportunities is available on the departmental website at http://www.sun.ac.za/english/faculty/science/earthsciences The incumbent is expected to complement the existing research strengths of the department in mid- and lower-crustal processes, magma petrogenesis and geodynamics, and should specialise in metamorphic petrology. The ideal candidate should have expertise in the development of computational methods and/or thermodynamic models to investigate metamorphic and anatectic processes in the crust. The incumbent will be expected to undertake research, undergraduate teaching and postgraduate supervision.

Duties:

  • Teaching and administration of undergraduate and postgraduate modules in metamorphic petrology and introductory courses in geology as required;
  • Undertaking research activities and supervising postgraduate students in metamorphic petrology, potentially in collaboration with other research groups;
  • Publication of research results in international journals relevant to the broader research field;
  • Obtaining research funds from external sources;
  • Undertaking departmental duties as needed.

Requirements:

  • PhD in Earth Sciences, with a focus on phase equilibrium modelling in metamorphic petrology;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of computational methods and software development in metamorphic petrology;
  • Publications in international journals in the relevant field commensurate with experience;
  • Record of active research and research dissemination, e.g. through presentations at conferences;
  • Excellent communication skills in the context of an academic teaching environment.

Applicants invited for interviews will be expected to present a lecture on his/her recent research and complete a written excercise intended to evaluate the candidate’s knowledge of phase equilibrium modelling and written communication skills.

Recommendation: Lecturing experience at tertiary level.

Commencement of duties: 1 June 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter
