KEW ROYAL BOTANIC GARDENS
Species Conservation Assessor x 2 (8 months f/t or 12 months at 3 days/week)
Full time. Fixed Term (FTA)
Kew Gardens, Richmond
Kew is the world’s leading botanic gardens, at the forefront of plant and fungal science, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a major visitor attraction.
We want a world where plants and fungi are understood, valued and conserved – because our lives depend on them.
We use the power of our science and the rich diversity of our gardens and collections to provide knowledge, inspiration and understanding of why plants and fungi matter to everyone.
We are looking for two experienced, organised and self-motivated conservation scientists to join our team at Kew.
Our successful candidate will be part of a team that assesses selected plant species for conservation assessments and analysis. With a proven background in a similar role, candidates for this post will have excellent knowledge of the IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria and their application.
As part of a five year collaboration with Toyota and IUCN, the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew has created a Plant Assessment Unit (PAU), where dedicated staff provide a focal point for Kew’s scientists working on conservation assessments. Addressing the need to accelerate the assessment of species in tropical regions, the team support the preparation and publication of extinction risk assessments on the IUCN Red List.
This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to our assessment work, focussing particularly in areas of interest for Kew’s Tropical Important Plant Area programme, and on groups such as Myrcia, a Neotropical genus of trees and shrubs which forms an important component of the diversity in some of Brazil’s most threatened habitats.
There are two fixed term roles available and the salary will be £25,456 per annum (pro rata). One position is full time, for 8 months. The other position is part-time (3 days per week) for 12 months. However, the 12 month position is flexible and full time working over a shorter period will be considered.
Salary will be £25,456 per annum pro rata. We offer a fantastic range of benefits including a broad range of Learning and Development opportunities, with access to the Civil Service training curriculum, generous annual leave entitlement for new starters, family friendly policies, a choice of competitive pensions and flexible benefits scheme.
