Bureau Chief, Editorials, Middle East and Africa, Nature
Nature, the world’s most authoritative science journal, seeks an experienced science journalist and editor to (1) oversee Nature’s editorials and (2) develop news coverage dedicated to Africa and the Middle East.
The Bureau Chief will be part of the team of award-winning reporters and editors producing outstanding content for Nature’s digital and print issues.
Working closely with our Editor in Chief, you will be responsible for producing thought-leading editorials that represent the voice of Nature to our global audience of scientists and science stakeholders.
Reporting to the Chief News and Features Editor, you will also assume responsibility for news coverage of Africa and the Middle East, growing and developing journalism about and for the scientific community in these regions.
You will shape the strategy for Nature’s editorials and journalism, especially in digital media.
We’re looking for someone with extensive experience in science journalism and editing and, ideally, experience commissioning, editing and writing editorial or opinion content.
Key tasks and responsibilities
Working with senior editors, plan, commission, edit and publish authoritative editorials and outstanding journalistic content for Nature in digital and print media.
Generate a stream of original ideas for editorials; in some cases, accurately report and write them; in others, commission and edit them from staff reporters and editors. Develop a vision and strategy for Nature’s editorials that represent the voice of the journal.
Commission and edit original ideas for news stories for Nature covering Africa and the Middle East. Develop a strategy for Nature’s news coverage of these regions.
Develop a network of trusted freelance journalists focused on Africa, the Middle East and potentially, in future, Russia.
Potentially manage one or more staff reporters.
Work closely with the heads of Nature’s regional bureaus in Europe, the Americas and Asia-Pacific region, as well as editors and reporters worldwide.
Experience, skills and qualifications
Extensive experience in science journalism and editing.
Experience in editorial leadership, including the development of editorial and journalistic vision and strategy.
Good knowledge of issues in science, science policy, the scientific community and world current affairs.
Good understanding of the political, research, research policy and funding landscape in Africa and the Middle East.
Experience developing a reporting team, including a network of freelance contributors and, ideally, experience managing reporters.
Ability to write and report journalistic and opinion content with accuracy and flair.
Proven ability to meet tight deadlines and to efficiently plan coverage in the short and long term.
Excellent interpersonal skills and proven success working across teams.
Command of journalistic values and best practices including libel law and defamation.
University degree in a relevant subject, or equivalent professional experience.
