Post Doctoral Research Scientist – Enteric Methane Emissions
Salary Details: 29,842 – 32,315
Location: North Wyke
Work Area: Science
Closing Date: 08 Mar 2019
Overview Of Role:
Rothamsted Research is seeking to appoint to a Post-Doctoral Research Scientist based at the North Wyke site in Devon, to work on the measurement and modelling of enteric methane emissions from the beef cattle (and potentially sheep) production on the North Wyke Farm Platform.
The main emphasis will be on measuring enteric emissions from the growing cattle during the winter housing period, using C-Lock GreenFeed instruments, and on developing methodology for emission measurements during the grazing period potentially using the same GreenFeed instruments, Boreal open path laser systems or other appropriate methods. The new data will be used to assess the impacts of dietary, animal, management and environmental factors on enteric methane emissions and, working more widely with the livestock team at North Wyke, to develop key performance indicators for sustainable production. The candidate will also collate and correlate emission data with diet quality parameters and predicted dry matter intake. Although the position is predominately sought to work on cattle within the North Wyke Farm Platform, there will be the opportunity to expand work into sheep utilising the new £2M small ruminant facility being developed at the North Wyke site for more detailed nutrient balance studies and associated enteric losses.
Suitable candidates will have experience of working with ruminant livestock, of conducting field experimentation, using instrumentation, and will have strong data analysis skills (e.g. use of R or equivalent). Successful candidates will join a multi-disciplinary network of Post Doctorate and senior Research Scientists working to advance sustainable agriculture. The candidate will have a good research and publication record to mirror their experience post PhD.
This full-time contract is for a fixed term of two years.
