The Institute is involved in a variety of population-based, registry-based and clinical epidemiological studies; these studies offer a huge and diverse ressource for research projects. The research of the Institute focuses on neurological and psychiatric diseases, diseases of the cardiovascular system and infectious diseases. The Clinical Epidemiology Unit uses and develops modern statistical and mathematical methods for the appropriate analysis of primary and secondary data. A particular focus of the Unit is the application of dynamic mathematical modelling approaches in order to simulate the spread of infectious agents in human populations.

The PhD project

  • focuses on healthcare-associated infections (especially multidrug resistant gram-negative bacteria and bacteria responsible for bloodstream infections) as well as infections in the immuno-compromised host
  • involves the statistical analysis of data already available at the Institute and the design of a mathematical modelling study closely linked to a current JPIAMR-funded project on healthcare networks
  • will add key evidence to an important and up-to-date research topic
  • is planned to result in three publications in high-quality peer-reviewed international journals

What we expect:

  • Masters degree in Biostatistics, Epidemiology or Mathematics
  • Advanced knowledge in statistical and epidemiological methods
  • Experience in statistical programming (e.g. R, Stata, Python)
  • Analytical and structured way of working, good team and communication skills, as well as a sense of responsibility and quality awareness
  • Excellent English or German language skills
