Lab Manager Position
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Research Management: 70%.
Support the collaborative research environment and provide guidance on technical and operational aspects of research proposals. Based on qualifications and experience, the candidate will work in conjunction with the Principal Investigator on the coordination of research projects in the laboratory.
Advise on technical procedures, techniques and equipment, and maintain conformance with specific operational standards.
Plan and conduct experiments that require expertise in at least some of the following techniques: microbiology, cloning and standard molecular biology protocols, protein biochemistry, DNA and RNA sequencing, in vitro enzyme assays, mass spectrometry, and data analysis.
Develop new protocols and carry out research projects.
Lab Operations: 20%.
Oversee and/or implement all policies governing the operation of the laboratory. The candidate will be responsible for laboratory safety, protocols, equipment purchasing and maintenance procedures, monitoring of laboratory inventory, maintenance of laboratory server documents, orientation of new laboratory staff and lab personnel checkout procedures. The candidate will also coordinate candidate postdoc interviews, manage space and office assignments, oversee glass washing staff, and coordinate the annual lab retreat.
Along with other duties as assigned by the Principle Investigator, the candidate will serve as the senior member of the lab, acting as a resource for both students and staff for a variety of issues.
Financial Management: 10%.
The candidate will coordinate all lab purchasing, monitor lab spending, and assist with accounts management. The candidate will help track laboratory spending in order to develop cost saving practices
Research Overview in the Sattely Lab:
The Sattely laboratory is focused broadly on plant chemistry and is deeply invested in pathway discovery. We are fascinated by the prolific chemistry of plants, including molecules that are critical for plant fitness and some of the most potent human therapeutics to date. Despite their important roles in plant and human health, very few complete plant biosynthetic pathways are known - especially in comparison to microbial natural product biosynthesis (>700 pathways have now been characterized in full). This lack of knowledge limits our understanding of natural product mode of action in plants and prevents access to engineered pathways. New plant genome sequences and synthetic biology tools have enabled three research areas in my lab: 1) development and application of methods for accelerating pathway discovery in plants (especially for clinically used therapeutics), and 2) discovering new molecules from plants that enable plants to survive non-ideal growth conditions, and 3) the use of metabolic engineering in plants as a tool to systematically and quantitatively determine the impact of plant molecules on human and plant health and ultimately optimize plant fitness and crop nutrient load. In my lab, we have developed a discovery platform to accelerate the elucidation of biosynthetic pathways that relies on a combination of biochemistry, synthetic biology, bioinformatics, transcriptomics, and metabolomics. This workflow allows us to use both a candidate gene approach to uncover novel pathways and new molecules, as well as a candidate molecule approach for targeted elucidation of metabolic enzymes. Our vision is to use engineered biosynthesis to reveal mechanisms by which natural products from plants contribute to plant fitness and human health.
