The University of Auckland

Auckland, New Zealand

The University of
Auckland is New Zealand’s pre-eminent research-led University. Established in
1883, it is an international centre of learning and academic excellence. Our
standing as New Zealand’s leading tertiary institution is the result of our
people. With 6,000 staff and 40,000 students, the University of Auckland is a
large and complex organisation, with an absolute commitment to academic
excellence.

The School of Biological
Sciences (SBS) currently ranks within the top 150 biology departments globally
(QS 2018) and is the highest ranked Biological Sciences department in New
Zealand. It is one of ten Schools/Departments within the Faculty of Science,
which continues to be the leading Science Faculty in New Zealand and one of the
largest in Australasia. It sits comfortably within the top echelon of science
faculties world-wide. The Faculty offers a wide range of subjects and
specialisations to more than 8,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students.

SBS currently employs
180 academic and technical staff, and supports over 160 research students in
addition to 1,000 undergraduate and coursework students. The School
incorporates a diverse range of research themes organised into three key
discipline areas: Biomedical and Applied Biology; Cellular, Molecular and
Organismal Biology; and Ecology, Evolution and Behavioural Biology.

The School provides
dedicated research facilities with world-class infrastructure, hosting the
Centre for Genomics, Proteomics and Metabolomics; the Centre for Biodiversity
and Biosecurity; the Bioinformatics Institute; and the Maurice Wilkins Centre
for Molecular Biodiscovery (a New Zealand Centre of Research Excellence in
Biomedicine and Biotechnology). The Institute for Innovation in Biotechnology
operates a bio-incubator housing a broad spectrum of bio-industry companies,
and providing services to external companies on a contract basis.

The wider Faculty of
Science has established a number of joint graduate Schools in cooperation with
industry leaders in their field. Combining academic excellence and an industry
perspective, these joint graduate Schools cover a wide spectrum from Plant and
Food Science to Biodiversity and Biosecurity, Coastal and Marine Science, and
Dairy Research. These have close linkages with SBS.

The School of Biological
Sciences seeks a Professor and Head of School who is committed to continuing to
