The Department of Photonics Engineering at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) is seeking a PhD candidate working on the synthesis of two-dimensional materials and their heterostructures. Technical University of Denmark has a broad range of activities within two-dimensional materials research, with world-class expertise in both experimental and theoretical research.
The successful candidate will be working on a novel laser-based approach for the synthesis of two dimensional- transition metal dichalcogenides. We will rely on you to develop novel spectroscopic methods for the in-situ monitoring of the growth process, which will allow for the first time atomic-level control of defects in these ultra-thin materials. In the early stage, we will be focusing on the growth of monolayers and study the role of defects on the optoelectronic properties of the two-dimensional materials. Then you will build upon this knowledge to fabricate novel combinations of van der Waals heterostructures and integrate them in optoelectronic devices, in particular van der Waals photovoltaics. Experiments will be conducted with a suite of capabilities available at DTU, including confocal Raman spectroscopy and photoluminescence, atomic force microscopy (AFM), transmission electron microscope, etc.
The successful candidate will be part of an exceptional collaborative environment consisting of scientists in nanomaterials, ultrafast optical spectroscopy, theoretical modelling and photovoltaics. The successful PhD candidate will have the chance to travel for three months or more to an external institution outside Denmark (United States or Sweden) working in world-leading groups with expertise on two-dimensional materials and ultrafast spectroscopy.
This project is associated to a Sapere Aude- Starting Grant funded by the Independent Research Fund Denmark.
- MSc. Degree in Physics, Nanotechnology, Chemistry, Materials Science, Engineering or science-related disciplines;
- Good communication skills in English (both written and oral);
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a cross-disciplinary team;
Previous experience in one of the following topics will be an advantage:
- Synthesis of two-dimensional materials and or/heterostructures by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) or similar;
- Experimental background in at least one of the following areas: electron microscopy (TEM or STEM), nanofabrication, ultrafast optical spectroscopy, confocal Raman/PL spectroscopy;
- Experience with lasers and optics.
Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, only candidates with an above the average marks are accepted in the program. Candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programs of DTU. Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
