As German Research Center for Environmental Health, Helmholtz Zentrum München pursues the goal of developing personalized medical approaches for the prevention and therapy of major common diseases such as diabetes mellitus, allergies and lung diseases. To achieve this, it investigates the interaction of genetics, environmental factors and lifestyle.
The AeroHEALTH Helmholtz International Lab is a German-Israeli research initiative, addressing the health effects of fresh and atmospherically aged anthropogenic and biogenic aerosol emissions. The most relevant anthropogenic aerosol sources include biomass burning, traffic as well as industrial emissions. Important natural emissions comprise e.g. gaseous biogenic emissions, wildfires or abrasive (desert) dust. In the atmosphere new aerosol particles are formed (e.g. secondary organic aerosol, SOA) and the primary particles are chemically and physically transformed. The AeroHEALTH research approach is based on simulation of the polluted atmosphere and the photochemical transformation of aerosols in atmospheric simulation chambers or photochemical reactors. In addition to a thorough physical and chemical characterisation the aerosols are subjected to biological systems such as human lung cell cultures using special exposure systems for mimicking the lung situation. The biological and toxicological responses are characterized by advanced molecular biological approaches (incl. omics technologies). Bio informatics and modern data science is applied to link the complex exposure situation with the biological outcomes and human health data.
The Helmholtz Zentrum München opens up a scientist position with work place at the Weizmann Institute in Israel to support the AeroHealth Helmholtz International Lab in the field of data science/bioinformatics.Full Scientist Position in Aerosol and Health research: Data scientist/Bioinformatician (f/m/d), work place at the Weizmann Institute in Israel
This position shall be the permanent representation of the Helmholtz Zentrum München at the Weizmann Institute during the funding period of the AeroHEALTH Helmholtz International Lab as of April 2019.
He/she shall set up and facilitate a strong cooperation of the aeroHealth consortium with the envisioned new "Big Data" core facility and the Center for Personalized Medicine at the Weizmann Institute. The candidate therefore should be highly motivated to build up expertise in the field of innovative "big data" analysis technologies, such as artificial intelligence or machine learning algorithms.
The successful candidate should have a profound education and practical knowledge in relevant natural sciences (environmental chemistry/earth science/biology/microbiology), as well as proven experience in data sciences and/or bioinformatics. He/she is expected to conduct laboratory studies and analyses that require informatic-oriented investigations. These would include topics such as exposomics, genomics, transcriptomics, epigenomics, metagenomics, and metabolomics, as well as conduct metadata-associated statistical analyses that can assist in forming testable hypotheses for predicting impact of complex aerosol exposure to cells.
The formal requirement is a PhD and a Master’s Degree in Computer Science, Bioinformatics, natural sciences or related fields with an excellent publication record. Scientific curiosity, ability to work independently and high motivation to work in a multi-disciplinary, collaborative environment are expected.
