FMI Postdoctoral Position:
Chemical Screen on Hydra Regeneration
A postdoctoral position is available in the group of Charisios Tsiairis to identify factors regulating Hydra regeneration employing high content chemical screening. Our laboratory is located at the Friedrich Miescher Institute for Biomedical Research (FMI) and we combine genetics, live cell imaging and quantitative analysis to understand how cells communicate and change their behavior in order to build a functional tissue.
The successful candidate will study regeneration of the freshwater polyp Hydra and the ability of a piece of tissue to re-organize around newly established Wnt signaling centers. We aim to screen a set of chemicals with characterized biological targets in order to discover components affecting the appearance of the Wnt organizer and the downstream patterning events. We will employ transgenic Hydras with fluorescent markers for organizer to visualize and quantitatively extract the effect of each chemical perturbation. This effort involves surgical manipulations of Hydra animals, use of robotics, high throughput imaging and image analysis. We are looking for a highly motivated individual who has experience in chemical screening and/or quantitative image analysis. Some familiarity with the Hydra/Cnidarian model system is welcome but not absolutely necessary. Excellent communication and organization skills, and the ability to work as a team member are expected.
