We are looking for a Director, Organization Performance to join our People and Culture team based at our Chevy Chase, MD campus. In this role, you will provide program/project management, change management and process engineering support to strategic, enterprise-wide initiatives and, in partnership with the Director, Learning & Organization Development, work to build organization-wide capability in project and change management. This role will focus on both the process and people side of change, including changes to business processes, systems/technology and skills/competencies. You will act as a coach for leaders in helping them fulfill the role of a change agent, as well as provide direct support to all levels of managers as they guide their teams through transitions.


You will be successful in this role if you can move a team forward despite ambiguity and continuous change, drive to decision and execution, as well as enjoy strategic and tactical level work.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Partner across HHMI to drive ongoing efforts aligned with our aspiration of continuous improvement to build comprehensive program/project plans, including change management strategies and execution, to implement new or enhanced programs and initiatives
  • Design and develop program/project management, change management and process reengineering center of expertise for HHMI; developing the “HHMI way” of running projects from start to finish to include: methodology, process, training and more to build organization capability
  • Lead all aspects of program/project management activities, including planning and milestones tracking, meeting management/minutes, internal reporting, change management and adoption, and after-action review for continuous improvement
  • Proactively identifying risk, gaps and resource bottlenecks and work with project teams to develop and implement mitigation plans
  • Develop strong stakeholder relationships and effectively communicate with all-staff levels from senior leadership to lab-based staff to ensure successful adoption across our distinct cultures 





  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business or another complimentary area
  • Certification in program/project management, change management and/or process re-engineering



  • 8+ years’ experience driving complex large-scale projects and initiatives with a minimum of 6 years’ experience in business operations, and/or program management with direct experience leading through organizational change and restructure
  • Experience establishing a PMO and/or change management function for an organization including: methodology, process, tools, and more, as well as adapting the approach to HHMI’s environments
  • Strong facilitation and project management skills throughout the life cycle of a project, including defining the project and scope, identifying required resources, selecting and managing the team, monitoring of deliverables and performance against objectives, adjusting where necessary, providing feedback and recognition, delivering the final “product” and creating process documentation
  • Experience building and executing change management strategy, including identifying sponsors, developing the training, managing through resistance, tracking progress and analyzing results
  • Supervisory experience, leading, coaching, mentoring as well as directing the work of others, providing feedback and managing team performance
  • Prior experience working in matrix organizations preferred
  • Prior experience in a scientific/research oriented environment, a plus
