Job description:

We offer the theme

"Influence of low river discharge on the biogeochemistry of the German Bight in 2018"

for a

Master thesis (Oceanography, Data science or similar)

starting in spring 2019

at the

Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar & Marine Research (AWI)

and the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht, Centre for Material and Coastal Research (HZG).

2018 was a year of exceptional warm weather in Germany and also very low discharge of the major rivers (Elbe, Rhein, Weser, Ems) into the German Bight and hence the North Sea. We are interested to see if such a low freshwater and low nutrient input into the North Sea is detectable in the biogeochemistry (Chlorophyll, salinity, temperature, oxygen content etc.) in the German Bight. Several monitoring station in the North Sea record these data. The aim would be to gather the relevant data from different data portals and compare relevant parameters with a “normal” year.
