Head of Theme (Capacity and Skills Development)
£48,202 – £53,558
The Medical Research Council (MRC) is a partner organisation within UK Research and Innovation (UKRI). UKRI is a new, publicly funded entity that brings together nine partners to create an independent organisation with a strong voice for research and innovation and a vision to ensure the UK maintains its world-leading position in research and innovation.
At MRC we support research across the entire spectrum of medical sciences, in universities and hospitals, and in our institutes, and internationally.
About the role
We are looking to recruit a new colleague to join MRC’s senior research management team – initially to provide leadership in training, capacity and skills, but also with potential to pursue other senior research or strategy roles in MRC or UKRI.
You will ensure there is a clear, well communicated and realistic plan for developing MRC’s research/training funding portfolio, policies and strategy.
You will be responsible for overseeing the MRC’s assessment, funding and review work on studentships and fellowships, for identifying and implementing priorities for change or growth, as well as supporting the development of cross-sector, cross UKRI training and skills policies and operations.
You will also be required to manage relationships, advice and policy development, and information sources and analysis on research training, skills and careers for the sector – with relationships across the research base, industry, charities and health systems.
The role includes line management of the Programme Managers in the team and contributing to training and staff development of other staff supporting this work.
It is essential that you have achieved a PhD in an area that is broadly relevant to the work of the MRC. Significant experience working in research management and a broad knowledge of the UK health research sector (in academic, the NHS and industry) is also essential.
You will have outstanding communication skills, written and oral, and the ability to think and plan strategically. You must have experience in managing and developing highly qualified professionals.
What we offer

The reward package includes a flexible working scheme, a Career Average Revalued Earnings pension scheme, 30 days annual leave allowance and a number of other benefits.
