Postdoctoral Position in Cancer Genomics and Precision Oncology

Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC)

New York, United States

Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) is a world renowned organization dedicated to the progressive control and cure of cancer through programs of patient care, research, and education.
The Berger laboratory is a group of experimental and computational scientists dedicated to the characterization of genetic mutations in human tumors in order to identify biomarkers of cancer progression and drug response. Using massively parallel next-generation DNA and RNA sequencing, the lab is developing and applying methods to profile individual patient-derived specimens including tumor tissue and circulating tumor DNA for somatic base mutations and other genomic aberrations that may influence response to therapy. Having established the capability to prospectively sequence patients’ tumors to guide treatment selection, we are analyzing the vast clinical-genomic data set of annotated tumor specimens spanning all cancer subtypes to identify prognostic and predictive biomarkers.
The Berger laboratory is seeking an outstanding postdoctoral fellow with a strong record in computational biology and a desire to develop and apply bioinformatics methods to problems in translational cancer biology. The successful candidate will interact with investigators with expertise in bioinformatics, genomic technology, cancer biology, molecular pathology, and clinical oncology. She/he will be an innovative thinker, exceptional communicator, self-motivated and organized, and will enjoy working with an interdisciplinary team.
The postdoctoral fellow will be jointly mentored by Dr. Michael Berger (Associate Director of the Marie-Josée and Henry R. Kravis Center for Molecular Oncology) and Dr. Ahmet Zehir (Director of Clinical Bioinformatics in the Department of Pathology). Projects will leverage the vast data set of tumor and germline genomic profiles and corresponding clinical data from more than 30,000 patients treated at MSKCC. In particular, the fellow will explore the prevalence of, the mechanistic basis of, and the clinical consequences of clonal hematopoiesis using this unique resource. Additional projects will utilize high-throughput tissue and ‘liquid biopsy’ sequencing data for the characterization of somatic and germline biomarkers, which can be prospectively applied to inform prognosis and guide treatment selection for patients under active care.
Applicants should hold a PhD and/or MD degree and have strong analytical and programming skills. Significant experience in cancer biology and genomic technology is highly desired. Outstanding English communication skills, organizational skills, and attention to detail are required.
Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center is an equal opportunity employer with a strong commitment to enhancing the diversity of its faculty and staff. Women and applicants from diverse racial, ethnic and cultural backgrounds are encouraged to apply.
