Scientific / postdoctoral posts
The Helmholtz Institut Mainz (HIM) is a physics research institute jointly funded by the GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung GmbH in Darmstadt and the Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz (JGU). HIM's research focuses on the structure, symmetry and stability of matter and antimatter. GSI is a research institution supported by the federal government and the states of Hesse, Rhineland-Palatinate and Thuringia and is a member of the Hermann von Helmholtz Association of German Research Centers.
For the section ACID (Accelerators and integrated detectors) in HIM in Mainz, we are looking at the next possible date, for a:
PhD physicist (m/f)
for the active cooperation in the accelerator project "Prototype for the 8MeV electron cooler at HESR/PANDA". In the next few years, in cooperation with colleagues from the Budker Institute in Novosibirsk (BINP), a new type of high-voltage generator based on gas turbines is to be commissioned, which will additionally enable potential-free power supply of loads at high potential. In contrast to existing dc accelerators, the limitations with regard to available power and cooling at high potentials have been lifted, making experiments in basic research and application possible that were hitherto considered unfeasible. The first test runs with the 600kV prototype are planned for 2019.
Doctorate in physics or a related subjectKnowledge of computer programs for the simulation of particle dynamics in linear acceleratorsPractical experience with accelerator physicsKnowledge in the field of vacuum technology, beam diagnosis and data acquisition is an advantage. Due to the international integration of the activity, a good knowledge of English is absolutely necessary
