Are you an enthusiastic in vitro pharmacology leader and would you like to lead a highly skilled drug discovery organization in a globally operating Finnish pharmaceutical company? We are looking for a Director, Molecular Pharmacology to play a major role in ensuring that the most innovative research tools, technologies and in vitro models are used to understand the cause and mechanisms underlying diseases under investigation. You will lead your organization towards ambitious goals supported by your understanding of the key concepts in biomedical research and/or drug discovery.
Your key responsibilities will include:
Leading a medium size organization responsible for building confidence, conceptual validation and translation of the therapeutic targets and compound profiling to support DMTA cycle, including also in vitro DMPK and safety screens.
Ensuring high scientific quality of in vitro studies and development of new assays to support drug discovery.
Leadership in molecular pharmacology activities all the way from the idea testing through lead ID and optimization. You will also set strategies and prioritize resources in the development of candidate nomination.
Oversight of in vitro pharmacology resources and capabilities.
Facilitating staff’s scientific growth.

Description of unit
Orion’s pharmaceutical innovations are created within its R&D organization, including e.g. non-clinical research, clinical development, formulation development and medical affairs. The organization employs top professionals in the field of drug molecule development and optimization.
Global Medicine Design contributes to the drug discovery process of Orion R&D from target validation all the way to the candidate nomination. We are responsible for translating new drug targets to the small molecule therapeutics together with other line functions. Our scientist in biology and chemistry are key players of the the DMTA cycle of multiple research programs driven by Orion’s three theraphy areas; CNS, Oncology and Rare Diseases.

You will have the opportunity to influence small molecule therapeutics as a member of a multidisciplinary management team of Global Medicine Design, and you will lead and influence the development of a strategically highly significant team in Orion.

We expect you to have expertise in biochemistry and molecular biology and be highly experienced with in vitro pharmacology in all phases of the drug discovery process. The ability to think creatively and solve problems, and outstanding management and leadership skills, are must-haves for this position. We also expect you to be comfortable working in a collaborative team environment, be highly capable at delving into projects to support ambitious team goals and have the ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects simultaneously.
PhD (and/or MD) in pharmacology, biochemistry, molecular biology or related discipline, or equivalent industrial experience
Prior experience (7+ years) in drug discovery or equivalent including experience on discovery program teams
Expertise in small molecule characterization using in vitro assays
Expertise in in vitro study design and analysis, in particular techniques for biochemical assays
Demonstrated scientific productivity and impact, as evidenced by strong publication record and ability to work effectively in a collaborative setting
Knowledge and experience
Strong knowledge across a broad range of biochemical assay technologies and instrumentation for drug discovery
Expertise in cell-based assays including techniques for ion channel assays and iPS
Discovery program leadership experience
Experience of drug development teams
Experience in assay transfer to and assay management at CROs
