We are looking for a Research Associate to provide support for the pre-clinical phase of a translational research programme aimed at assessing a lentiviral vector uniquely engineered for gene transfer to the lungs within the Gene Therapy Section at the National Heart and Lung Institute.
The research programme is led by Professors Eric Alton and Uta Griesenbach. The Gene Therapy Section is a multi-disciplinary research team and is part of the UK Gene Therapy Consortium.
The Department of Gene Therapy is a member of the UK CF Gene Therapy Consortium (GTC), the largest group world-wide conducting translational research in respiratory gene therapy. Combined the GTC has completed six Phase I/IIa and one Phase IIb non-viral gene therapy trial. The latter established, for the first time, that gene therapy can stabilise cystic fibrosis (CF) lung disease. Excitingly the GTC has also developed a lentiviral vector and is currently preparing for a first-in-man lentivirus lung trial in CF patients.
This new project will bring together both the translational science and the teams’ expertise in evaluating new therapeutics in clinical trials for the treatment of other lung conditions. Our aim is to rapidly translate our Lentiviral gene delivery platform for a portfolio of diseases. The funds supporting this research project are provided by The Wellcome Trust. You will develop a programme based on the lentiviral vector platform.
You will also be expected to contribute to supervision of technicians and students, and participate in teaching related activities within College as well as identifying and developing suitable techniques, and apparatus, for the collection and analysis of data. Other duties include, but are not limited to; conduct data analysis, write reports for submission to research sponsors and direct the work of small research teams.
You should have a PhD in Molecular Biology or related discipline or equivalent research and have knowledge of gene therapy. It is essential that you have practical experience in a broad range of laboratory techniques and be computer literate with a good knowledge of different computer programs with experience in data presentation and statistical analyses.
The post is full-time and fixed-term, until 30th September 2022.
