GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung in Darmstadt operates one of the leading particle accelerators for science. The department “Control Systems” (ACO) presently employs about 60 hardware and software developers and is responsible for the design and implementation the control system of the existing and future FAIR accelerator facilities.
We are now inviting qualified candidates to apply for the following position:

as Leader of the group ”Embedded Software Development” (m/f)

The control system of the GSI / FAIR accelerator complex is constructed as a hierarchical distributed system of device control computers for controlling the components of the accelerators and control computers for process visualization. A central timing system handles the high-precision synchronization of the controllers.
The responsibility of the group is the implementation and support of the embedded control software of the device control computers, of which there will finally be about 1500. For software development, the FESA framework developed by CERN and GSI is used. The development platform is Linux. The target platforms are RT-Linux and LM32 Soft Core.
Your tasks include:You will be head of a group currently consisting of 9 and responsible for leading your team in technical as well as administrative matters. You will lead, further develop, and organize your team in order to achieve the development goals within time and with the required functions and quality. It is expected that you keep close contact and professional working relationships with accelerator and equipment experts, and that you will anticipate, analyse and evaluate requirements for the group, while prioritizing and coordinating the required work with all stakeholders. The development projects of the group are defined and managed in close cooperation with the head of department and the other group leaders. You will present the group’s activities both in-house and externally. You will foster and facilitate professional exchange with other international experts, participate in workshops and specialist’s conferences and – in particular – foster existing collaborations with other partner institutes (e.g. CERN). Within your group, you are expected to actively lead, participate but also take the initiative to develop technical solutions for the given complex problems and maintenance tasks yourself.
Your profile:You have a university degree in the field of computer science, electrical engineering or equivalent. A thorough and up-to-date expertise in OO software design and development of distributed real-time systems is a prerequisite for filling this position. We expect several years of demonstrated professional experience as a software engineer in the technical field (C/C++, Python, Java), preferably as head of a team of software developers. Proven experiences in software development methodologies and project management as well as a good technical understanding complete your profile. We expect you to have the necessary skills to lead the group, including: Strong leadership and communication skills, ability to convince and integrate, the ability to manage personnel, but also the willingness to actively assist in the realisation of projects. Independent and results-oriented working methods, forward thinking, good analytical skills and a high sense of responsibility characterise you. The position requires good command of German and English.
