The Luxembourg Institute of Health (LIH) is a leading public research center in Luxembourg for basic, pre-clinical and clinical research in biomedicine and public health. The Department of Oncology aims to be instrumental in the development and execution of world-class cancer research within prioritized areas based on previous strong intradepartmental scientific track records. The strategic research domains within the department are outstanding preclinical/translational research within the fields of Neuro-Oncology, Immuno-Oncology and Immunotherapies and Tumour Resistance Mechanisms. The department should also represent a knowledge hub and a training ground for the next generation of cancer researchers in Luxembourg.

Main responsibilities of position

  • Manage the staff and budget of the Oncology Department and define its research strategy in discussion with the group leaders, scientists and the general management of LIH.
  • Guarantee scientific excellence of the research work performed in the department by providing scientific advice and guidance to the principal investigators.
  • Ensure the proper functioning of the department and adapt technological means and other resources to the needs of the research teams.
  • Foster collaborations within the department, as well at the national and international level.
  • Contribute to LIH transversal research themes and cross-departmental research activities.

Key Accountabilities

  • Develop her/his own research within the prioritized research areas of the department.
  • Review the scientific projects of the department together with the group leaders and the principal investigators in order to remain competitive at the international level.
  • Participate actively in recruitment process of senior researchers and group leaders
  • Manage and develop internal and external communication of DONC in cooperation with LIH
  • Manage the department finances and contribute actively to fundraising and grant applications for the department and LIH.
  • Establish national and international scientific collaboration networks favouring the exchange of competences and the visits of researchers and students.
  • Contribute actively to the training of PhD students in the department.
  • Represent the department at a national and international level.
  • Promote value creation from research patents, licencing of patents, contracts with industry, etc.
  • Participate in scientific evaluations of research projects, research groups, scientific advisory committees, etc.
  • Be a member of the executive management committee and scientific Steering Committee of LIH.
  • Participate in reporting activities by LIH.
  • Teaching activities at a University are encouraged.

Key Skills, Experience and Qualifications

  • PhD, MD/PhD or equivalent qualification with an excellent track record in scientific publications in the field of basic or translational oncology research (a medical background with specialization in Oncology would be considered an advantage). Another advantage will be extensive experience within the research domains prioritized within the department.
  • At least 10 years of experience in cancer research or equivalent seniority within the research domains/areas of the department.
  • Experience in national and European research projects.
  • Appropriate qualifications or equivalent experience allowing for the supervision of PhD students
  • Active participation in international networks in the field of oncology.
  • High international scientific visibility documented by high-level publications, invitations to conferences, etc.
  • Extensive management skills as demonstrated by the successful management, for several years, of a large team.
  • Language skills: perfect command of English, other European languages, especially French and German would be an advantage.
