LC-MS Analytical chemist

GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research KIel.

Kiel, Germany

GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel is a foundation of public law jointly financed by the Federal Republic of Germany (90 %) and the state of Schleswig-Holstein (10 %) and is one of the internationally leading institutions in the field of marine sciences. Currently GEOMAR disposes over an annual budget of approx. 80 million Euro and has approx. 1000 employees.

The research unit Marine Natural Products Chemistry/ GEOMAR Centre for Marine Biotechnology within the research division Marine Ecology, is offering a post as

LC-MS Analytical chemist

starting as soon as possible.

Job Description:
Analytical chemistry is the backbone of natural product research. We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced post-doctoral candidate with demonstrated expertise in modern analytical marine natural product chemistry. The main task of the holder of this post will be LC-MS/MS-based chemical profiling and metabolome mining (particularly by MS/MS fragment similarity based molecular networking) coupled to chemical imaging, i.e. Desorption Electrospray Ionization-Imaging Mass Spectrometry (DESI-IMS) of natural products from marine microbes and macro-organisms. Further experience in dereplication, statistical analyses and downstream chemistry (purification, structure elucidation) is required.

The successful candidate will apply the newest LC-MS/MS methods in drug discovery and chemical ecology projects on marine macro- and microorganisms. He/she will closely interact with other research groups from broad range of scientific disciplines at both GEOMAR and Kiel University. He/she will be involved in maintenance of the LC-MS/DESI-IMS equipment, establishment / validation of new analytical methods, training/supervision of postgraduate / undergraduate students and preparations of external funding proposals.

Candidates with strong track records of accomplishment in terrestrial plant, terrestrial microbe related analytical chemistry/secondary metabolome mining are highly encouraged to apply, provided they have sufficient hands-on skills and experience.

The research unit Marine Natural Product Chemistry is equipped with state-of-the-art chemical facilities including UPLC-QTOF-MS-coupled with DESI Imaging Mass Spectrometry, HPLC-DAD-MS, HPLC-HRMS, GC-MS, accelerated solvent extraction (ASE) system, FT-IR, polarimeter and related databases, as well as microbiology/biotechnology facilities and over 50 in vitro biological assays. GEOMAR has full access to high-resolution (cryo-) NMR facilities at the Chemistry Department of Kiel University. We are members of several excellence clusters, such as The Future Ocean, and several EU research consortia.

We offer highly international, and research-driven environment with excellent research infrastructure and networks.

Qualifications required:

  • A diploma and a PhD in LC-MS involving marine/analytical chemistry or a related field
  • Demonstrated competence and hands-on skills in LC-MS and MS/MS for dereplication of diverse classes of marine natural products
  • Proficiency in various commercial and in house databases, and big data management
  • Complex statistical analyses of the obtained big data
  • Previous experience in imaging mass spectrometry (IMS) is highly desirable
  • Previous experience in purification (HPLC) and chemical characterization of diverse types of natural products by high field NMR, HRMS, LC-MS
  • Experience in writing publications, conference papers and research proposals
  • Fluency in spoken and written English and excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent organisational skills, prioritisation of multiple tasks, meeting strict deadlines
  • Demonstrated project and laboratory management skills in multiple tasks
  • Capability for independent work, problem solving with discretion, self-motivation and curiosity

Previous work with microbial natural products is highly desirable.

The position is available for a funding period of three years, starting 1st December 2018. The salary depends on qualification and could be up to the class 13 TVöD-Bund of the German tariff for public employees. This is a full-time position. The position cannot be split, flexible work models are possible. The fixed-term contract shall comply with Section 2 Paragraph 1 of The Act of Academic Fixed-Term Contract (German WissZeitVG).

Working language in the group is English.
