To expand our commitment to the physical sciences community, Cell Press will be launching a broad-interest, high-quality, open-access journal serving researchers in the general area of physical sciences. We are seeking a visionary, insightful Editor-in-Chief to lead this initiative.
The Editor-in-Chief will have the unique opportunity to shape a prominent journal in vibrant fields of research and lead the editorial team according to his or her creative vision. As a respected member of the global research community, the Editor-in-Chief will create a high-impact journal grounded in a strong understanding of the different fields and the needs of authors, readers, and reviewers. S/he will be responsible for defining the aims, scope, and formats for the journal, building a strong network of leading researchers working in relevant areas, recruiting exciting studies, and ensuring the quality and value of the journal as a forum for the best work across the entire field.
This journal aims to publish significant advances in all areas of physical science research, including all aspects of chemistry, material science, energy research and relevant environmental and earth science. Its strong contribution to the field will complement the premium chemistry and energy journals from Cell Press, Chem and Joule, as well as the upcoming journals on sustainability and material science. The journal will employ an open-access model similar to Cell Reports for the life sciences.

This position requires a strong research background and broad scientific interests. The successful candidate will demonstrate dedication to serving the scientific community, enthusiasm for communicating science to a broad readership, and the ability to lead the editorial team. The minimum necessary qualification is a doctoral degree and post-doctoral work in relevant areas. Interested applicants with a current academic appointment but who are seeking new challenges in an editorial/publishing role are encouraged to apply. Previous editorial and/or management experience is strongly preferred. The key qualities we look for are breadth of scientific interest and curiosity, the ability to think conceptually and critically about a wide range of scientific issues, strong communication skills, leadership ability, and a penchant for teamwork.
As a member of the editorial and scientific community, the Editor-in-Chief will also have strong interpersonal skills and the ability to bring/build a broad network of contacts, domestically and internationally. He/she will travel extensively to attend conferences and visit research institutions. The Editor-in-Chief will be expected to collaborate with internal colleagues in production, marketing and business development and to contribute to the overall publishing strategy of the Journal and Cell Press as a whole.
