Ref. 10.18.61 - Bolseiro de Investigação/Research Associateship – Thin-film solar cells by hybrid sputtering

Research Centre: International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory - INL

Location: Braga, Portugal

Research Field: Thin-film solar cells

Career Stage:  MsC entry level

Open date for applications: November 8th, 2018

Closing Date for applications: November 22th, 2018 23:00 WET (Western European Time)

The International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory - INL (, was founded under an international legal framework to perform interdisciplinary research and to deploy and articulate nanotechnology for the benefit of society. INL aims to become the world-wide hub for nanotechnology addressing society’s grand challenges in Aging & Wellbeing and Mobility & Urban Living and developing a Safe & Secure Society.

SR&TD project specifications: INL participates in the following Scientific Research and Technological Development project (‘SR&TD project’) which is financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) through the Operational Programme for Competitiveness and Internationalization (COMPETE 2020) and National Funds through Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT).

(a)Name of the project: Correlated Analysis of Inorganic Solar Cells in and outside an Electron Microscope (CASOLEM)

(b)Reference number: POCI-01-0145-FEDER-028917

(c)Description: The project "Correlated Analysis of Inorganic Solar Cells in and outside an electron microscope" aims to fabricate in-situ TEM cartridges for carrying out electrical measurements of Cu(In,Ga)Se2 (CIGS) solar cells. These chips will be universally adaptable, provide flexibility and significant advantages to the existing commercial ones and will enable simultaneous experimentation both inside and outside the TEM. Subsequent to their fabrication they will be employed for the study of CIGS solar cell devices under near-operating conditions. This will provide unprecedented insight into relevant processes at grain boundaries and interfaces by enabling correlated multi-scale analysis with resolutions ranging from the atom to the entire device.

(d)Scientific Area: Materials Engineering, Physical Sciences.

Description of the functions and key primary responsibilities: The successful Candidate will work on the task 2 of the SR&TD project, and will be assigned the following working plan:

  • Fabrication of CIGSe solar cells using a hybrid sputtering process
  • Characterization and optimization of the solar cell performance
  • Optimization of sample fabrication for analysis in special TEM cartridges for in-situ characterization

Supervision: The work plan will be developed at the INL under the scientific guidance of Dr. Sascha Sadewasser.

Eligibility conditions, required qualifications and expertise: Candidates must comply with the following requirements:

(a)  Hold a MSc Degree in the field of Physics, Material Science, Materials Engineering, or equivalent research fields;

(b)  Be a Portuguese citizen, a European Union citizen or a non-European Union Citizen residing in Portugal;

(c)   Not have spent more than twelve months, during the three years immediately prior to the deadline for submission of applications, at the INL;

(d) Expertise/scientific knowledge in semiconductors, photovoltaics, or solar cell fabrication or characterization will be an advantage;

(e)  Have a good knowledge of English/Fluency in English is required.

Supporting Documents

Candidates must enclose the following supporting documents in pdf format, failing which the application will not be considered for evaluation:

(a)  Cover letter;

(b)  Curriculum Vitae;

Evaluation process

The evaluation process will follow a four-stage process:

  1. Candidate eligibility check:

Only full applications will be considered for evaluation. The applicant will be responsible for the data submission and validation. The application language is English.

Candidates who do not meet the eligibility requirements will not be included in the CV evaluation.

  1. Curriculum Vitae evaluation:

The evaluation will be carried out by a selection committee and shortlisted candidates shall be selected for interview(s)

  1. Interview(s) and final assessment:

Interviews will be conducted through telephone, web conference or face-to-face meetings, as may be deemed appropriate. A formal report will be issued by the selection committee recommending the selected candidate ranking candidates in order of preference.
