An emerging and fundamental challenge of modern biology is to understand how information encoded in the genes of organisms structures their phenotypic traits, their interactions with environments and other organisms, and ultimately, the functions of natural and managed ecosystems of which they are a part. The University of Arizona is assembling a cluster of outstanding new faculty members to contribute to the development of a new program in Ecosystem Genomics. To complement and extend six hires to date in the cluster, we are searching for a new colleague at the assistant or associate level (although strong candidates will be considered at any rank) to develop teaching and research programs to advance theory and/or modeling of ecosystem genomics.
We seek a candidate whose research focuses on discovering and applying rules, or developing and testing theory, for elucidating links among genes/genomes, gene expression, phenotypic traits of organisms, and ecosystem processes, and who seeks collaboration with empirically oriented colleagues. Expertise may be grounded in a range of life science disciplines, including biochemistry, ecology, evolution, genomics, biomedicine, biogeochemistry, or ecosystem science, and may focus on a range of study organisms, community types, habitats or ecosystems. We anticipate an approach that embraces novel approaches to quantitative methods, including mathematically grounded theory, numerical simulations, or statistical approaches for creative bioinformatic analysis of “big data” for hypothesis testing. Example research foci include: tracing of insect-plant-microbe interactions in biogeochemical cycling, the development of genomics-inclusive ecosystem models, the role of evolutionary mechanisms in predicting population, community or ecosystem responses to climate change, the links between the origins of life and the structure of ecosystems, or the design of biological structures of managed systems for addressing the challenges of a sustainable human future.
The successful appointee will support and promote Inclusive Excellence – the UA strategic initiative designed to create an inclusive environment for all students, staff, and faculty. The appointee will teach courses at the graduate and undergraduate levels and contribute to mentoring students, including those from underrepresented backgrounds. The appointee also will participate in outreach and contribute to departmental/college/university service. Critically, the appointee will interact with the dynamic and exciting cluster and related initiatives at the interfaces of genomic and ecosystem sciences. In these and other ways, the appointee will develop innovative approaches to enhancing student engagement, increasing diversity, and expanding the university’s collaborations with community and business partners.
The cluster hire initiative in ecosystem genomics is enabled by the University of Arizona’s Never Settle commitment to cross-college collaborations that emphasize engagement, innovation, partnering and programmatic synergy. Depending on the research and teaching interests of candidates and strategic needs in academic units, faculty members hired into cluster hire positions will be invited to join one of several possible colleges, including the College of Science, and the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, and one of several departments or schools in those colleges, including the departments of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology, Entomology, Molecular & Cellular Biology, and Soil Water & Environmental Science; the schools of Plant Sciences, and Natural Resources & the Environment, and potentially in other units, depending on the interests and fit of the candidate and unit priorities.
