Institute of Translational Genomics
Area of research:
Scientific / postdoctoral posts
As German Research Center for Environmental Health, Helmholtz Zentrum München pursues the goal of developing personalized medical approaches for the prevention and therapy of major common diseases such as diabetes mellitus, allergies and lung diseases. To achieve this, it investigates the interaction of genetics, environmental factors and lifestyle.
The Institute of Translational Genomics (ITG) focusses on translating insights from genomics into mechanisms of disease development and progression. At ITG, we leverage big data in genetics and genomics to gain insights into the mechanisms underpinning human health and disease. We work with biobank-sized whole-genome sequencing datasets, in combination with high-dimensional phenotypic and multi-omics data. We seek a Systems Architect/Systems Administrator to join the Analytics arm of our team. Within the Institute, Analytics is in charge of developing smart solutions for addressing data-intensive questions.
To join us in our lively team of international researchers and to support our growing needs for reliable scientific computing infrastructure we are looking for aPost-Doc Translational Genomics (f/m/diverse)
You will be the institute's key point of contact with the Scientific Computing department. You will be responsible for monitoring current storage and processing load, anticipate future needs, and take proactive steps to ensure seamless operational interface with our compute facility. You will manage internal resources (scientific software, databases, notebook servers, virtual images), and will resolve a broad range of technical questions for ITG colleagues (e.g. software installation, job scheduling). If needed, you will translate needs into actionable requests for the Scientific Computing department and will oversee implementation through follow-up and continued interaction. You will also be responsible for the Institute's outward-facing presence (web servers, web apps, social media).
The successful candidate will have a relevant professional diploma, and demonstrable experience in managing large *NIX systems. You will be familiar with all aspects of system administration on a multi-user *NIX environment, and must have the ability to maintain an up-to-date library of scientific software. You will have in-depth knowledge of HPC environments and job scheduling software. You will be able to design and help deploy a forward-looking, future-proof computing environment. Proficiency with hardware, both in terms of storage and processing is required, ideally with the ability to build server specifications in response to specific scientific needs. You will be service-orientated, with great attention to detail and good communication skills. Prior experience or fluency with containerisation, workflow languages and/or cloud architectures is highly desired. Experience with managing online content (websites, social media) is desirable, and fundamentals of database administration is a plus. You will have excellent English language skills.
At the Helmholtz Zentrum München, you can contribute together with leading researchers to the investigation of the development, prevention and treatment of environmental diseases such as diabetes, chronic lung diseases and allergies. In order to further promote your professional development, we offer extensive and targeted research training and career programmes. We support the reconciliation between work and private life with flexible working time models, occupational health management, day care facility for children, a childcare subsidy, Elder Care, as well as other counseling and support services.
Remuneration and benefits are in accordance with the collective agreement for the public service (TV EntgO Bund).
The position is (initially) limited to three years.
The activity involves special knowledge and experience specific to own scientific skills.
As a holder of the Total E-Quality Award, we promote equality of opportunity. In order to increase the proportion of women in management positions, we would be pleased to receive corresponding applications. Qualified applicants with physical disabilities will be given preference.
We are looking forward to receiving your comprehensive online application until the 2nd of December 2018.
