About the team/job
EMBL is operating an Integrated Facility for Structural Biology at the PETRA III synchrotron radiation source at DESY, Hamburg. The core of the facility is formed by three X-ray beamlines that provide state-of-the-art conditions for X-ray crystallography and small-angle X-ray scattering experiments and a protein crystallisation facility. The facilities are open to the international scientific community and hundreds of users visit them every year.
You are expected to participate in the construction, manufacturing, installation and maintenance of synchrotron beamline instrumentation and experimental facilities. Tasks will range from technical drawing and machining to the assembly and testing of precision mechanics. You will work in an international team of technicians, engineers and scientists and will support user operation at the beamlines which can include also off-hours work on short notice.
You should hold a master craftsman certificate or an equivalent engineering degree in electronics or a related discipline and have a minimum of 5 years professional experience. Experience with the layout, assembly and test of modular fieldbus systems and configuration of PLCs preferably under TwinCAT is a requirement. Hands-on knowledge with electronic positioning systems and familiarity with the design and assembly of digital and analogue electronic circuit boards is important. You must be well organized and must have very good communication skills to collaborate in an international and multidisciplinary team. The working language is English and good level of German is required to be able to work with local suppliers and external collaborators.
