Researcher (2 postitions)

Two Researcher positions are available at the Section of Oncology, Department. of Clinical Science, Faculty of Medicine, University of Bergen. One position is funded through a 4 year grant from the K.G. Jebsen Research Foundation and one position is funded through a 4 year a grant from the Pink Ribbon campaign. Both positions will be affiliated to the new K.G. Jebsen Center for Genome-Directed Therapy in Cancer.

About the project/work tasks

  • The candidates to be hired will be employed at a new K.G. Jebsen Center, headed by professor Per E Lønning, MD, PhD. The center is closely affiliated with the Department of Oncology, Haukeland University Hospital, Bergen. In addition to the center leader, the center has 5 PI’s, working with research projects related to different cancer types. As a team we aim to perform science at supreme quality, with publications in high-impact journals. Thus, the positions suit candidates with the highest personal ambitions.
  • The team focuses on solid tumors in general, with the main emphasis on breast cancer, colorectal cancer, malignant melanoma and sarcoma. The primary aim of our program is to explore mechanisms of chemoresistance and endocrine resistance and identify predictive markers to cancer therapy. For this purpose we employ the full spectrum of molecular analyses, including next generation sequencing (NGS).
  • The work place will be within the Mohn Cancer Research laboratory in Bergen. Our laboratory is equipped for all types of modern molecular analyses, including NGS.
  • The scientific program for the new researchers will focus on analysing NGS data (some targeted sequencing, but mainly whole exome (WES) and whole genome (WGS) sequencing) from human tumor specimens versus clinical outcome within our translational research programs.
  • A main work task hereunder will be development and optimizing algorithms for modelling of subclonal dynamics during treatment of solid tumours (i.e identification of subclone of cells that are sensitive or resistant to cancer therapy)

Qualifications and personal qualities:

  • The candidates must hold a Norwegian PhD or an equivalent degree within bioinformatics or a closely related area.
  • The candidates should have completed one period of work at a postdoctoral level within a related area or have alternative working experience at a similar level. In addition, the candidate should be proficient with methods of relevance
  • The candidates should document experience in analysing large data sets (preferably from cancer patients) and in applied statistics (preferably statistical methods within translational cancer research).
  • The candidates should be proficient in R and/or Perl and/or C++ and/or Python
  • Familiarity with commonly applied algorithms of relevance analysing cancer data sets, with particular emphasis on data generated by NGS, will be considered an advantage (hereunder, algorithms for variant calling, copy number calling, assessment of subclonal dynamics etc.)
  • The candidates must have a substantial publication track record relative to the stage of his/her career.
  • The candidates should be able to work independently and in a structured manner, and have the ability to cooperate with others.
  • The candidates should be proficient in both written and oral English and / or the Norwegian language.

  • Starting salary will be found at level 59 – 62 (code 1109/salary scale 24.3 – 24.6), currently NOK 508 800 – 537 700 gross p.a. for a full time position; following ordinary meriting regulations. A pension contribution of 2 % will be deducted and deposited to the state pension scheme

The following premises are valid for this Researcher position

  • The Researcher will be a member of the research group of which the topic/project belongs to.
  • The salary shall if possible be 100% covered by external financing.
  • The Researcher shall actively contribute to attract external funding to the research project, both for her/his own position and other
  • positions, from the Research Council of Norway, EU and other sources.
  • The Researcher is expected to have her/his research activity financed by the project of the researcher and the projects of the associated
  • research group.
  • The Head of Department may allocate work for the Researcher related to specific research projects.
  • The Researcher may participate in committee work and other administrative tasks within UiB.
  • The Researcher has no teaching duties, but is expected to supervise master and PhD students when this is a natural part of the research
  • activity of the research group.
  • The Researcher may apply for competence promotion according to the regulations for promotions.
