We seek to strengthen the investigation of genome stability mechanisms in the ageing process and thus gain new insights into causes of ageing-associated diseases and precipitate new treatment strategies. The research topic should focus on a key aspect of genome stability such as DNA repair mechanisms, chromatin remodelling and epigenetic mechanisms of genome maintenance, DNA damage responses in the cellular and organismal context, stem cell biology and telomere function, or cellular senescence. We expect synergism within the Cologne campus including the CECAD excellence cluster, the Max-Planck-Institute for the Biology of Ageing and Metabolism Research, and the Centre for Molecular Medicine. Moreover, the group should be able to integrate into a structured research focus at the University of Cologne such as molecular mechanisms regulating skin homeostasis, the regulation of cellular function through mitochondria, innate immunity, cell death, proteostasis, neurodegeneration, or DNA damage responses in cancer therapy. The group, which will be located at the MPI-AGE, will have access to core facilities at the MPI-AGE and the CECAD Research Centre including animal facilities, imaging, proteomics, lipidomics, and bioinformatics.

The Max Planck Research Group Leader will direct his/her basic research program at the MPI-AGE. The initial appointment will be for 5 years with possibility of 2+2 years extension after a successful scientific evaluation and in compliance with labor law and financial requirements.

The candidate should have a Ph.D. or M.D. degree, a track record in scientific excellence and in obtaining extramural funding, having enabled him/her to conduct interdisciplinary research.

Eligible candidates have established a strong track record in the postdoctoral phase, and demonstrate educational and personal aptitude as well as substantial international experience. The MPI-AGE and the Faculty of Medicine seek to appoint a candidate with an excellent track record in research on genome integrity. Social skills, the capacity to work in multidisciplinary teams and applying for third-party research funds are prerequisites.

Supported by a competitive funding including resources for research positions, a budget to realize the project and a start-up package, candidates are expected to develop an independent and vigorous research program. Furthermore, candidates should be committed to excellence in undergraduate/graduate teaching and in supervising PhD students and clinician scientists.
