ASRC seeks a Research Associate in the Neuroscience Initiative who will conduct innovative academic research with mouse models in connection with CUNY programs. The incumbent will take lead in designing and executing experiments for projects focused on the genetic and epigenetic mechanisms underlying the environmental impact in mouse models of demyelinating diseases and psychiatric disorders. This position reports to the Director of the Neuroscience Initiative.

Duties include but are not limited to:
- Works under the Director of the Neuroscience Initiative to perform experiments related to research plans and proposals for acquiring funding.
- Develops novel research protocols involving injections by multiple routes (intravitreal, intracerebral, intraperitoneal, subcutaneous, intraocular).
- Performs experiments requiring animal surgery, including optogenetic stimulation or in utero electroporation.
- Assists other research staff with animal surgery.
- In collaboration with Director of Neuroscience Initiative, helps with establishing novel experimental protocols and animal models. implements new interdisciplinary research protocols.
- Coordinates with veterinarian technicians for the implementation and development of breeding strategies and is responsible for genotyping, immunophenotyping and behavioral characterization (using standardized protocols used in Rodent Behavior Analysis Suite) of transgenic mice to be used for specific experiments.
- Responsible for ordering and shipping of animals and assists in the reduction of mice, upon consultation with the Director of the Neuroscience Initiative.
- Assists in IACUC related submission and implementation of IACUC related protocols; keeps accurate documentation relative to approvals, deadlines and amendments of IACUC protocol submission.
- Trains students and provides support related to experimental protocol.
- Maintains accurate records of protocol and reagents related to fixation and post-fixation tissue processing, including embedding and sectioning.
- Participates in academic research projects conducted in connection with CUNY programs; may assist faculty, staff, and students in conducting research and lead research efforts involving others.
- Performs experiment procedures related to tissue collection, fixation, and post-fixation tissue processing, including embedding and sectioning.
- Prepares and delivers substances to mice through multiple routes. Keeps accurate records for controlled substances.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

- Conducts academic research in connection with CUNY programs; may assist faculty, staff, and students in conducting research and lead research efforts involving others.

- Collects, analyzes, and assures validity of data
- Writes progress reports; writes and publishes findings
- Collaborates with internal and external colleagues
- Adheres to standards for safety and hygiene and ethical conduct as defined by the University and relevant outside parties

Minimum Qualifications:
Doctoral Degree in a related field and demonstrated research ability.

Other Qualifications:
A preferred candidate should have:
- Ph.D. in specific research areas (e.g., molecular biology, biochemistry, neuroscience) with highly specialized skills.
- Experience in working with transgenic mice and animal surgery.
- Experience in stereotaxic surgery in the central nervous system, including intracerebral delivery of drugs; experience with optogenetic stimulation.
- Experience in animal handling and dosing through multiple routes.
- Experience with (frozen and paraffin embedded) tissue sectioning.
- Experience with preparation for electron microscopy section.
- Expertise in animal behavioral testing. Experience with video-tracking systems and software (e.g. Ethovision, CleverSys), metabolic cages or animal models of multiple sclerosis or depression.
- In-depth knowledge of the scientific principles, methods and processes (technical and/or theoretical) used to conduct scientific research including experimental design, methods of data collection and analysis, and interpreting and reporting results.
- Demonstrated expertise at working across and within disciplines.
- Publication of results in high quality journals.
- Ability to work well independently and as part of a team, and to collaborate and motivate successfully.
- Ability to plan workload effectively and to work under time pressure and heavy work load.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work evenings and weekends.
