Job description:

As German Research Center for Environmental Health, Helmholtz Zentrum München pursues the goal of developing personalized medical approaches for the prevention and therapy of major common diseases such as diabetes mellitus, allergies and lung diseases. To achieve this, it investigates the interaction of genetics, environmental factors and lifestyle.

The Institute of Translational Genomics focusses on translating insights from genomics into mechanisms of disease development and progression. At ITG, we leverage big data in genetics and genomics to gain insights into the mechanisms underpinning medically-relevant, complex human traits. Within the Institute, Analytics is in charge of developing smart solutions for addressing data-intensive questions.

To join the analytics arm of our team we are looking for a

Data Scientist/Bioinformatician (f/m/diverse)
2018/0481

Job Description
The Institute is handling a growing amount of biobank-sized whole-genome sequencing datasets, in combination with high-dimensional phenotypic and multi-omics data. You will manage the challenges associated with the analysis, handling and storage of large genomic datasets. Aware of current challenges in big data processing (high volume, parallelism, format conversion, etc.), you will maintain and adapt existing data manipulation scripts and pipelines, as well as develop new solutions as the need arises. You will support fellow team members in their bioinformatics needs. You will keep up to date with new database releases, tools and methodological advances in the field, and will feed those back to Institute members through presentations and briefings. You will be expected to take part in scientific writing, and there will be opportunities to present results at international conferences and symposia.

Your Qualifications
The successful candidate will have a degree (PhD, MS or BS with equivalent experience) in a quantitative field (Bioinformatics, Applied Mathematics, Engineering, Computer Science or a related discipline). They will be familiar with *NIX environments and the bash scripting language, ideally in the context of a high-performance computing environment. They will be fluent in Perl, Python, or both. A foundation in statistics (estimators, hypothesis testing, generalised linear models), as well as proficiency with R, will be beneficial for this role. The candidate should be familiar with bioinformatics resources such as Ensembl, the GWAS catalogue, genome annotation and expression databases, as well as publically available datasets. Familiarity with REST APIs and at least one DBMS is also expected. Previous experience with compiled or development languages (e.g. C, C++, Haskell, Julia...) and statistical method development is a plus, but not required.

Our Offer
At the Helmholtz Zentrum München, you can contribute together with leading researchers to the investigation of the development, prevention and treatment of environmental diseases such as diabetes, chronic lung diseases and allergies. In order to further promote your professional development, we offer extensive and targeted research training and career programmes. We support the reconciliation between work and private life with flexible working time models, occupational health management, day care facility for children, a childcare subsidy, Elder Care, as well as other counseling and support services.

Remuneration and benefits are in accordance with the collective agreement for the public service (TV EntgO Bund).

The position is (initially) limited to two years.

The activity involves special knowledge and experience specific to own scientific skills.

As a holder of the Total E-Quality Award, we promote equality of opportunity. In order to increase the proportion of women in management positions, we would be pleased to receive corresponding applications. Qualified applicants with physical disabilities will be given preference.

We are looking forward to receiving your comprehensive online application until the 18th of November 2018.
