The successful candidate will join the emerging team of Dr. Christopher Schliehe (Assistant Professor) that is embedded in the Department of Immunology. His group is focusing on antigen presentation and immune regulation in the context of immunotherapies and combines a large spectrum of experimental approaches (including classical immunological techniques, in vivo models, genetic screens, mass spectrometry, and chemical immunology) to elucidate the molecular mechanisms involved in direct- as well as cross-presentation of antigens on MHC class I molecules. The candidate will perform both hypothesis-driven as well as unbiased genetic projects to investigate novel aspects of antigen expression, processing and presentation.

The Department of Immunology performs cutting edge basic and translational research, participates in patient care by performing laboratory diagnostics (Laboratory for Medical Immunology) as well as supporting clinical immunology, and by conducting a wide range of educational activities. Major research focuses in the department span molecular to clinical immunology and include the development and function of innate and adaptive immunity, autoimmunity, immune deficiencies, immunity to infection, neuroimmunology, and lymphoid malignancies. The department has and provides access to state-of-the-art in-house facilities and equipment that support basic and translational research. In addition, the department is involved in multiple international consortia and networks, which facilitate innovation and support rapid implementation of new immunological concepts and technologies.
Qualifications and skills
We are looking for a talented and highly motivated PhD student with a Master´s degree (or equivalent) in Immunology, Biology, Life Science, Biomedical Science or related fields. Candidates should be enthusiastic about fundamental research, have acquired excellent theoretical knowledge and practical skills in a related field, and show a key interest for molecular and cellular immunology. We are searching for a well-organized team player with excellent communication and writing skills in English (working language) who will be able to independently drive the challenging projects proposed for this thesis. Experience with in vivo models will be considered advantageous.
Being able to present a certificate of good conduct is a condition for the appointment.
Terms of employment
The successful candidate will receive a temporary position for 4 years. The gross monthly salary is € 2.279,- in the 1st year and increases to € 2.919,- in the 4th year (scale OIO). The terms of employment are according to the Collective Bargaining Agreement for Dutch University Medical Centers (CAO UMC).
