Immunology position: The Postdoctoral Fellow will conduct research at the interface of cellular immunology and biomaterials. The aim of the project is to determine the chemical and physical parameters that enables T cells to find and kill antigen-presenting tumour cells in engineered 3D environments. The project makes use of a novel 3D printer for cells and extracellular matrices to modulate cell density and positioning as well as chemical functionality and physical properties of the matrix. A particular focus of the project is the impact on cell and matrix stiffness on T cell function (i.e. cellular biophysics). The successful candidate will have extensive experience in T cell biology/cellular immunology including isolating primary T cells from mice and flow cytometry.
Imaging position: The Postdoctoral Fellow will employ lattice light-sheet microscopy (LLS) to image the interface of T cells with antigen-presenting cells. In particularly, the projects aim to understand how the topology and dynamics of the plasma membrane enable the T cell receptor to recognise and distinguish antigenic from benign ligands. The successful candidate will develop LLS imaging protocols and analyses for T cells that contact tumour cells that present different types of ligands. A particular focus is the distribution of the T cell receptor in the context of the dynamic, shape-changing membrane.
The successful candidates will join our team of cell biologists and biophysicists at the EMBL Australia Node in Single Molecule Science, University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia (http://sms.unsw.edu.au) and the ARC Centre of Excellence in Advanced Molecular Imaging (http://www.imagingcoe.org). The postdoctoral researchers will have an active role in conceiving and implementing approaches, training and supervision of research staff and students and presentation of the results in the form of publications, international conference presentations and potentially grant applications.
The postdoctoral position is a full-time fixed term position available for 12 months with strong prospects for a 2-year extension. Salary range is A$91,743-A$98,127 per year plus 9.5% superannuation and leave loading.
