The Leibniz Institute on Aging – Fritz Lipmann Institute e.V. (FLI), Jena (Germany), is a federal and state government-funded research institute. The FLI is a member of the Leibniz Association (WissenschaftsgemeinschaftGottfried Wilhelm Leibniz e.V.). FLI’s internationally visible and highly competitive research is focused on understanding the mechanisms of aging and associated age-related diseases. More than 220 scientists from 30 countries are currently investigating the molecular mechanisms of aging and the occurrence of age-related diseases. Our aim is to create the basis for new approaches in medicine as a way to improve health in the elderly (www.leibniz-fli.de).

Scientific Director (f/m)
The Scientific Director (f/m) heads the Institute, together with the Administrative Director. She/he serves as the scientific representative of the Institute, manages its scientific activities, and is spokesperson of the FLI Executive Board. In conjunction with the Board of Trustees, the Scientific Advisory Board and the FLI Assembly of Research Group Leaders, she/he determines the scientific focus of the Institute and develops this strategically. All issues dealing with the Institute’s scientific structure and organization fall within her/his scope of responsibility. In consultation with the FLI Group Leaders, she/he coordinates the research direction of FLI and carries the responsibility for ensuring compliance with all legal requirements applicable to the research.
The challenging task itself, the size of the Institute, and the close collaborations held at national and international levels with renowned partners at universities, hospitals and other research institutions require a person with excellent leadership competence and communication skills. The capacity to think and act in visionary and strategic terms is expected, as is the ability to interact productively and assertively.
Professional excellence and proven research competence in an area of the field of molecular aging is required.
Excellent language skills in both German and English are required. Familiarity with the German science system and the range of opportunities available to publicly funded institutions is advantageous.
The position of Director is connected to the appointment as tenured professor (W3) at the University of Jena (FSU). This appointment will be reached by a joint procedure of FLI and FSU. The function as Scientific Director (f/m) of FLI is agreed upon for an initial period of five years (renewal of appointment is possible).
