Postdoctoral Fellow/Department of Pediatrics – 18000001IU

Description

Postdoctoral Fellow position is available in the laboratory of Oguz Akbilgic in the Center for Biomedical Informatics, Department of Pediatrics at University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC). The successful candidate will work with Dr. Oguz Akbilgic, whose research program focuses on predictive modeling for clinical decision making. The current research interests of Dr.Akbilgic’s lab are social determinants of health disparities and physiologic data analysis for prediction of disease progress and states. To this end, we implement both statistical modeling and machine learning methods to build models for the purpose of prediction, classification, and clustering.

The candidate will work closely with Dr. Akbilgic in predictive model development. The responsibilities include data extraction and preprocessing, building and validating machine learning algorithms as well as development of novel machine learning algorithms. The data preprocessing includes implementation of signal processing and feature extraction methods. The model development will include but not limited to statistical models, Bayesian networks, convolutional neural networks, deep belief networks, deep survival analysis and other classical machine learning algorithms.

Research is intended to lead to both publications in high-quality peer reviewed journals and successful grant submissions. The initial appointment will be for 6 months. Depending on the performance and funding availability, an extension may be considered.

Qualifications

Applicants with a PhD in Statistics, Quantitative Methods, or Computer Science as well as expertise and an avid interest in the following areas are encouraged to apply: machine learning, deep learning, statistical computing, big data analytics. Theoretic model development expertise in deep neural network algorithms is highly preferable. Data extraction, preprocessing and organizing will be required periodically, therefore, intermediate level SQL knowledge is required. The candidate is expected to be comfortable with coding in different platforms such as Python, Spark, Matlab, and R.

Candidates should apply by emailing Dr. Oguz Akbilgic at oz@uthsc.edu a single PDF with a cover letter, resume, names and contact information of three professional references, and a Career Statement not to exceed 2 pages in length.

Salary will be commensurate with relevant experience and is competitive for postdoctoral research fellows. The position includes an excellent benefits package (http://www.uthsc.edu/postdoc/benefits.php). Located in Memphis, a dynamic Mid-South city rich in culture, history, diversity, music and cuisine, the University of Tennessee Health Science Center is one of the largest, most comprehensive academic health centers in the United States with a solid commitment to postdoctoral training. UTHSC is an EEO/AA/Title VI/Title IX/Section 504/ADA/ADEA/V institution in the provision of its education and employment programs and services.
