Job description:

Hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) is an attractive technology for energy products and bio-based materials for wet biomass feedstock, like lignin, algae, sewage sludge as well as food wastes, partly containing significant amounts of inorganics and heteroatoms. However, the quality of the produced bio-crude can be limited in case of nitrogen contained in the feedstock. Therefore, special attention has to be paid to the fate of nitrogen during hydrothermal conversion. The analysis of chemical nature as well as the distribution of nitrogen in the conversion products (gas, bio-crude, aqueous phase and solid residue) is necessary not only for evaluating the oil as fuel/chemicals but also for clarifying the liquefaction mechanism.

The goal of this project is to investigate the influence of lipids on the fate of nitrogen during HTL of model mixtures, to get a deep understanding of the formation as well as the interaction pathways of N-containing compounds via HTL.

Tasks and Methods

Batch scale HTL of model compounds (major work, the HTL dependence of 3 reaction temperatures)

Products separation and extraction

Nitrogen distribution

GC, GC-MS, Elemental analysis, HPLC, FTIR, NMR,TGA

Chemieingenieurwesen, Verfahrenstechnik
