Job description:

The Central Institute of Engineering, Electronics and Analytics (ZEA-2: Electronic Systems) is a scientific and technical institute of the Forschungszentrum Jülich GmbH performing research and development projects in cooperation with the institutes of the Forschungszentrum and external partners. The focus of our work is the development of electronic and information technology system solutions in sensor- and detector technology, as well as measurement techniques.

Background and task

In cooperation with the Institute of Agrosphere (IBG-3), a highly sensitive, scalable measuring system with extremely high phase accuracy in the μrad resolution will be developed to investigate the soil quality and water content of agricultural areas. For the analysis of the subsoil, the electrical conductivity is measured contactless and non-invasive by using the electromagnetic induction method. The resulting phase shifts of the electromagnetic fields are a measure of the soil conductivity. Challenges for reaching the resolution are the various disturbing influences (temperature, noise, …) which significantly reduce the phase measurement accuracy.

Thesis targetWithin the scope of this work, a method should be developed which continuously and in-situ analyzes system errors and thus minimizes the drift effects. This method should be suitable for integration into the measuring system. In the first step, a complete analysis of the system components (ADC, amplifiers, coils, ...) in terms of phase drift and phase noise will be performed model-based and experimentally in the laboratory. In the second step, the correction method will be developed on the base of these results and verified in the laboratory and field measurements.
