A Postdoctoral fellow position is open in the RNAcore at the Houston Methodist Research Institute. Preferred candidates will have a strong research background in RNA biology with interest in messenger RNA (mRNA) construct design, processing, and translation for gene editing and cellular reprogramming.
The RNAcore is directed by Professor John P. Cooke who has over 30 years of experience as a physician-scientist whose team generates fundamental insights, and translates them toward transformative therapies. Dr. Cooke has over 30 patents and over 42,000 citations; h index = 109 (Google Scholar 4-15-18), and received an “Outstanding Inventor Award of 2015” from Stanford University.
Recent advances in the generation and delivery of mRNAs now provides greater opportunity for their use as powerful research reagents for cancer biology, as well as novel oncotherapeutics. Research grade mRNA may be useful to cancer biologists for genome editing; for non-coding RNAs; or for transient expression of a wide variety of genes or reporters. Clinical grade mRNA may be used to enhance cell therapies; to develop cancer vaccines, and for gene replacement strategies. The RNAcore at HMRI is partially funded by a generous grant from the Cancer Prevention Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT) and is composed of two units. The Research Unit designs and generates constructs for fundamental research and for pre-clinical stages of RNA Therapeutics. The Clinical Unit develops and validates cGMP processes, and generates pharmaceutical grade RNA for early phase clinical studies. We operate in a world-class GMP facility that has dedicated space specifically to manufacture novel therapeutic mRNAs and to perform stability testing and quality assessment. The integration between these two units provides a unique opportunity to be a part of an academic group that is integrated into the scientific community, but also has a translational mission. In addition, we offer multi-disciplinary training opportunities, including a weekly seminar series, journal clubs, and other career-development activities, such as grant writing.
