Job Description


Scientists at Janelia Research Campus are engaged in exciting, multidisciplinary projects in neurobiology and imaging.  The Genetically-Encoded Neuronal Indicator and Effector (GENIE) project produces and optimizes cutting-edge fluorescent protein-based sensors for neural activity imaging for high-resolution monitoring of brain function. The GENIE project employs project team members with expertise in advanced molecular cloning, protein engineering, high-throughput cell-based screening, in vivo imaging, and image analysis. This Research Technician will conduct in vitro, mammalian cell-based screens to improve sensor functionality; and manufacture, purify, and biophysically characterize fluorescent protein-based sensors.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. DNA transfection of tissue culture cells
  2. High-throughput bacterial library screening assays
  3. High-throughput mammalian cell-based screening assays
  4. Protein biochemistry and biophysical characterization of fluorescent protein-based sensors
  5. Set-up, operate, and maintain laboratory instruments
  6. Record and communicate data in laboratory notebooks, written reports, and oral presentations
  7. Report the work done and the methods used to the Project Scientist
  8. Contribute to team meetings and planning

Preferred Qualifications:


Education / Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in the life sciences
  • Expert level cell biologist with greater than 5 years of laboratory experience
  • Protein biochemistry experience
  • Molecular biology experience


Skills and Abilities:

  • Perform complex motor tasks with speed and precision handling small volumes of reagents
  • Safely and accurately perform laboratory bench work for up to 8 hours per day
  • Operate microscopes
  • Operate and program liquid handling robotics
  • Focus attention on a repetitive task for extended periods
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Keep accurate and organized records of work performed


Physical Requirements:

  • Regularly reaches and grasps with arms and hands
  • Regularly uses fine motor skills to pipette and manipulate small objects
  • Long periods of standing and/or sitting
