We invite applications for several open postdoctoral positions in the Fitzgerald lab at HHMI’s Janelia Research Campus in Ashburn, VA. Janelia is a unique world-class research community near Washington, D.C. dedicated to understanding the function of neural circuits and developing synergistic imaging technology. Its highly collaborative structure is designed to support interdisciplinary research in small groups. Students interested in conducting their Ph.D. research in the Fitzgerald group should apply directly to Janelia’s graduate program (in partnership with the Johns Hopkins University).
Experiments are revealing the structure and dynamics of brain circuits in unprecedented detail. Coordinated theoretical progress is needed to transform these data into hypotheses, theories, and principles of brain function. Our research integrates top-down theory, experimental design, data analysis, and modeling to build theoretical frameworks and computational tools that advance the theoretical and experimental frontiers of neuroscience. The scientific phenomena studied in the group are broad, and successful applicants will have the opportunity to think about a wide range of questions. We would be particularly excited to identify individuals who would be interested to research brain-scale computational neuroscience in larval zebrafish or the dynamics of hippocampal memory circuits. However, we will also consider applicants with alternate research interests that are well-suited to the Fitzgerald Lab and the Janelia Research Campus. We maintain active collaborations with several experimental groups, and successful applicants will have the opportunity to develop their theoretical work in close contact with experiments. Applicants should thus have strong interests in interdisciplinary science and a desire to work independently and collaboratively across disciplinary lines.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Develop, execute, and publish research projects in computational and theoretical neuroscience.
- Formulate and refine theoretical principles that can guide broad thinking about the brain.
- Instantiate these principles in concrete theories of specific neuroscience systems.
- Perform analytical and numerical calculations to elucidate the theory and make testable predictions for future experiments.
- Collaborate with experimentalists to design new experiments, advance data analysis methodology, and build models from cutting-edge neuroscience data.
- Ph.D. in physics, biophysics, computational neuroscience, applied mathematics, engineering, or another related discipline.
- Fluency in English and strong written and spoken communication skills.
- Experience with scientific programming and data analysis.
- Prior neuroscience experience is desirable but not required.
