The laboratory of Christopher A. Walsh, a Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) lab at Boston Children’s Hospital affiliated with Harvard Medical School and the Broad Institute, seeks an experienced and motivated lab manager to oversee the daily operations of their dynamic neuroscience research group. The position involves managing lab processes, supervising research staff and activities, and providing administrative support to a large research laboratory.

 

Principle Responsibilities:

 

  • Organize and maintain structure of the lab, managing day-to-day activities
  • Develop, implement and maintain laboratory guidelines and standard operating procedures
  • Oversee operation and maintenance of essential equipment, maintaining all service records and contracts
  • Ensure supply inventory is adequate and act as primary resource for purchasing, managing vendor relationships
  • Evaluate and implement new materials, methods and equipment
  • Supervise research assistants and coordinate their involvement in daily lab tasks and research projects
  • Orient and train all personnel on lab safety, conduct, standards, and technical and administrative practices
  • Liaise between the lab, Children’s Hospital, and State and Federal safety and regulatory offices to ensure compliance with all applicable regulations
  • Serve as lab emergency contact, and enforce compliance with safety and lab procedures among all lab personnel
  • Liaise between the lab, HHMI, and Children’s Hospital on budget management, fixed asset inventories, purchasing, use of host accounts, staffing, etc
  • Attend and participate in regular laboratory meetings
  • Assist with preparation of grant proposals, publications and presentations

 

Qualifications:

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in biological or health sciences and 8 years of relevant experience, or Master of Science degree and 4 years of relevant experience
  • Experience with and knowledge of standard molecular and cellular biology, safety and laboratory procedures
  • Supervisory and team management experience
  • Strong organizational, communication and time management skills
  • Independent, self-motivated and able to work collaboratively as part of a team
