Area of research:
Scientific / postdoctoral posts
As German Research Center for Environmental Health, Helmholtz Zentrum München pursues the goal of developing personalized medical approaches for the prevention and therapy of major common diseases such as diabetes mellitus, allergies and lung diseases. To achieve this, it investigates the interaction of genetics, environmental factors and lifestyle.
Germany’s largest research organization, the Helmholtz Association, launches Helmholtz AI: This dedicated, interdisciplinary platform will compile, develop, foster, and promote applied artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) methods nationwide for all Helmholtz centers in collaboration with its external and university partners. Its central unit is currently being implemented in Munich, one of Germany’s major hubs for applied AI/ML, at the Helmholtz Center Munich.
Fresh knowledge and ideas drive the success of our research programme. With Helmholtz AI, the Helmholtz Association now has the unique opportunity to leverage its broad and large data sets across many fields with analysis expertise to answer questions with societal impact.
We are inviting applications for
Young Investigator Group Leaders – Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning (f/m/d)
with potential focus areas including algorithmic machine learning, big data integration, data assimilation and model-based machine learning, explainable AI and computer vision.
In order to encourage bold and unconventional ideas, our environment nurtures your talents and supports new approaches over incremental successes.
We are interested in receiving applications from people with a PhD and postdoc experience who want to address important applied AI/ML questions in our creative, multidisciplinary and collaborative environment. Successful candidates are expected to take this opportunity to enthusiastically shape the innovative and rapidly developing research field of AI/ML in Munich and beyond and should establish themselves as prominent focal points in the field.
Young Investigator Group Leaders must hold a PhD, have international experience, should be highly motivated and innovative with an outstanding track-record in the field of machine learning, causal inference, computer vision, artificial intelligence, data science and/or data analytics. Demonstrable leadership experience, e.g. group supervision and management, including successful raising of extramural research funding, as well as business, entrepreneurial start-up and industry experience are considered assets.
What we offer you
At Helmholtz AI we pursue scientific excellence, innovation and impact. With a substantial starting package that includes staff and running costs, this is your opportunity to be a significant part of and to advance your career in a globally recognised environment, establishing your research group in a vibrant AI community with one of the biggest data treasures in Germany. The highly international, multidisciplinary setting provides ideal circumstances for your professional growth, collaboration and to expand based on external grants.
Remuneration and benefits are in accordance with the collective salary agreement for the public service (TV EntgO Bund). The positions are initially limited to five years, with a tenure track option based on evaluations planned.
Situated on the foothills of the Alps, Munich is consistently ranked as one of the most vibrant and enjoyable cities in the world, with an exceptional quality of life. Greater Munich is also home to several world-class universities and research institutes, creating a truly inspiring scientific atmosphere.
With the help of extensive and goal-orientated professional development measures and career-building programmes we encourage you to grow as a person. To ensure a good work/life balance we assist you with flexible working hours, in-house health management, a nursery, and an “Elder Care” concept as well as other consultation and support options.
To further increase the share of women we very much welcome the respective applications. As a holder of the Total E-Quality Award, we promote equality of opportunity and support women with e.g. mentoring programs, a dedicated training program for women’s career development and family support offers, such as holiday care for schoolchildren.
Qualified applicants with physical disabilities will be given preference.
