The Justus Liebig University Giessen (JLU), member of the German Center for Lung Research (DZL), is currently establishing the Institute for Lung Health (ILH) and invites applications for the

W3 Professorship for Aberrant Remodeling and Regeneration in Chronic Lung Disease
as of now.

Reference is made to § 61 Para. 7 of the Hessian Higher Education Act (HHG) and to conditions of employment based on § 62 HHG.

We invite applications of highly motivated candidates to build up a multidisciplinary research team for basic and translational lung research in the above-mentioned topics. Successful candidates should have a vision for an innovative research program and a strong motivation to cooperate with research groups in basic, translational and clinical lung science within local, national and international research consortia (SFB1213 “Pulmonary Hypertension and Cor Pulmonale”, SFB-TR84 “Innate Immunity of the Lung”, KFO309 “Virus-induced Lung Injury”, SFB1021 “RNA Viruses”, the Excellence Cluster “Cardio-Pulmonary Institute” (www.ECCPS.de), and the German Centers for Lung Research (DZL; www.DZL.de) and for Infection Research (DZIF; www.DZIF.de), the research consortia in the field of “Pulmonary Inflammation” at the University of Marburg, in the field of “Cardiovascular Medicine” at the University of Frankfurt and in the field of “Cardio-Pulmonary Basic Science” at the Max-Planck Institute for Heart and Lung Research). In addition, a strong commitment to undergraduate and graduate student education within the graduate program “Molecular Biology and Medicine of the Lung” (MBML; www.uni-giessen.de/fbz/fb11/forschung/graduierte/mbml) and the “International Giessen Graduate Centre for the Life Sciences” (GGL) is expected. Moreover, the candidates are expected to contribute to further research priority fields of the Faculty of Medicine in Giessen (Infection, Inflammation and Immunity, Reproduction, Repair and Regeneration).

Applicants are required to have an excellent academic degree in natural sciences or medicine. The successful candidate should have outstanding internationally recognized scientific track records in the above-mentioned field. Experience and success in obtaining extramural funding is required. Additional prerequisites are leadership and coordination skills. Furthermore, a proof of a particular pedagogic aptitude and a necessary qualification to represent the specialist field in academic teaching with great commitment are required.

The ILH is a unique and novel institute supported by federal and state funding, operated under the umbrella of the DZL with its Universities of Giessen and Marburg Lung Center (UGMLC) site and located at the JLU. A new research building harboring this institute will be constructed at the Biomedical Research Campus of the JLU, hosting the Biomedical Research Center Seltersberg building, the Excellence Cluster Cardio Pulmonary Institute building, and the Center for Infection and Genomics of the Lung building. In this vibrant environment of internationally renowned basic and translational lung research, the ILH will focus on the parenchymal/vascular compartment in lung physiology and disease, with “Resilience, Remodeling, Repair and Regeneration (R4)” as joint topics.
