Giessen University (JLU)

W1 Professorship (with W2 tenure track) for Renewable Material and Bioresources

Justus Liebig University Giessen

Giessen, Germany

Owing to the successful application to the German federal-state programme for promoting early-career researchers (tenure-track programme), the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, Nutritional Sciences and Environmental Management invites applications for a

W1 Professorship (with W2 tenure track)
for Renewable Material and Bioresources

The position is offered with the earliest possible starting date for a period of six years pursuant to § 64 Para. 3 and 4 Hessian Higher Education Act (HHG). According to § 64 Para. 3 HHG, the applicant should have gained a doctoral degree at an institution of higher education other than Justus Liebig University Giessen (JLU) or have been in academic employment at an institution other than JLU for at least two years after conferral of a doctoral degree. The duration of said post-doctoral employment may not exceed four years or, in the case of successful completion of further academic training pursuant to § 62 Para. 6 HHG, may not exceed seven years. In the case of successful completion of the six-year W1 position, which is to be assessed in an evaluation procedure pursuant to § 64 Para. 2 HHG, the appointment will be converted into a permanent W2 professorship. Proficient knowledge of German is expected.

The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching within the faculty’s BSc and MSc study programs in German and English language. Participation in the further development of study programs and subject-specific graduate programs is desirable.

In research, the professorship will focus on the investigation and development of renewable plant raw materials as bioresources. This includes the use of plant raw materials as an alternative to fossil-based raw materials, their use as renewable energy sources of the third generation, the extraction of high-quality plant constituents from crop species that have not been cultivated or have only been cultivated to a limited extent up to now, and the expansion of the use of established agricultural crops as a basis for the bio-economy. The focus should be on the development of integrated systems of varieties and cultivation methods that lead to a diversification of agricultural production systems and an increase in agrobiodiversity. This requires the integration of approaches from plant biotechnology and plant breeding in combination with sustainable, nutrient-efficient and resource-saving cultivation concepts. During your work at JLU, successes in the independent acquisition of third-party funds are expected.

Research priorities of the future professorship should be oriented essentially towards these goals in cooperation with neighboring disciplines, thereby enabling integration both in the field of Bioresources and the further development of the field of Crop Science.

A relevant publication profile in relevant peer-reviewed journals is expected. First experiences with the acquisition of third-party funding are desirable. The willingness to work in interdisciplinary research projects of the faculty and the university is expected as well as the maintaining of international relations and the willingness to engage in the international networking of the faculty. The ability to teach in English is required.

The JLU aims to employ more women in academic research. We therefore particularly encourage female candidates to apply. JLU also pursues the goal at faculty leadership level of increased competence in dealing with gender and family-related issues. JLU is regarded as a family-friendly university. Applicants with children are very welcome. Applications from disabled people of equal aptitude will be given preference.
