University Professor for Systems Biology of Chronic Infections

University Medical Center Mainz, JGU

Mainz, Germany

With approximately 7,500 employees, the University Medical Center of the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (Germany) is one of the largest employers in the State of Rhineland-Palatinate. Our center treats more than 300,000 patients every year and is also a prominent institution for research and education. As a maximum care hospital, we offer numerous opportunities for personal and professional development.

The Institute of Immunology is inviting applications for the position of
University Professor for Systems Biology of Chronic Infections
(comparable to salary grade W2 LBesG, six-year contract with tenure-track)

We are looking for a researcher with a doctorate who will represent the advertised field in research and teaching (including further scientific training), thereby expanding the immunological profile of the University Medical Center. The successful applicant is to join our faculty at the earliest possible date.

The central scientific task connected to the professorship is the research of the immunological basis of chronic infections and the evasion techniques connected to them on the bioinformatic and systems biology levels, as well as in tissue and micro-environment contexts. The expertise required for such research is to be evidenced through publications and the acquisition of third-party funding.

The research connected to the professorship is thematically at the heart of the Research Center for Immunotherapy (FZI) and the CRC 1292 (Targeting convergent mechanisms of inefficient immunity in tumors and chronic infections). The integration of joint activities with the University Medical Center’s other research foci (CTVB, FTN) and other CRCs (TR1258, TR156) will also be part of the work. The ability to cooperate is therefore key for a successful application. Since the acquisition of third-party funding and the establishment of a working group are part of the professorship, the ability to carry out and establish independent research and leadership competence are necessary.

The teaching tasks of the person taking up the professorship include redesigning and carrying out medical pre-clinical teaching in regard to fundamental knowledge on immunotherapy, as well as teaching in the subjects of Biology, Chemistry and Pharmacy. Furthermore, the willingness to guarantee further scientific training is a prerequisite. Therefore, proof of teaching competence and additional scientific achievements according to § 49 Para. 1 No. 4 a) of the Hochschulgesetz are required. All programs are taught in German. German language proficiency is therefore required.

The professorship is financed by the Tenure-Track Program of the federal and state governments. Researchers in early phases of their career are therefore especially invited to apply for this position. Applicants must meet all general legal requirements as well as those laid out specifically in § 49 of the Hochschulgesetz of Rhineland-Palatinate.

The position constitutes a private law employment relationship to the University Medical Center of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. The professorship will initially be filled for a period of three years and will be extended for another three years contingent upon a successful probationary period. After this period the position will be converted to a tenured professorship (W2 LBesG), provided the holder of the position meets the relevant regulations of higher education law (evaluation procedure) as well as the general legal requirements.

The state of Rhineland-Palatinate, the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz and the University Medical Center of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz are committed to close personal mentoring for students and, therefore, expect a strong presence of teaching staff at the University. The University Medical Center strives to increase the share of women in scientific and managerial positions and therefore especially invites qualified women to apply. Disabled applicants with appropriate qualifications will be favored.
