Duties and Responsibilities

Applications are invited for Max Planck UCL Research Fellows in Computational Psychiatry in the Max Planck UCL Centre for Computational Psychiatry and Ageing Research (MPC) to undertake high quality research and produce high-impact publications under the supervision of Professor Ray Dolan and Dr Zeb Kurth-Nelson.

The overarching goal of the MPC is to use computational approaches to understand the causes of individual differences in behavioural development, with an emphasis on psychiatric disorders and cognitive ageing. The Fellowships offer an opportunity for innovative input, including developing an independent line of research.

In line with this the post holders will be expected to exploit computational approaches to brain (for example, through use of magnetoencephalography) and behaviour to leverage insights into decision processes, including how we build cognitive models of the world. The ultimate goal is to help unravel the core deficits underpinning psychiatric disorder.

The posts are available immediately, funded by the Max Planck Society for 2 years in the first instance and extendable to 4 years.

Key Requirements

Applicants should have a PhD in computational neuroscience, psychology, or a related area by the agreed start date of the position and experience of conducting research in neuroscience. Experience in Hierarchical Bayesian model-fitting and model-selection techniques is essential. Applicants must also demonstrate experience of computational modelling of behaviour (reinforcement learning and similar), together with a solid knowledge of the decision neuroscience and reinforcement learning literature. Experience of conducting neuroimaging (preferably MEG) and behavioural research and analysis of acquired data, as well as experience of programming, is desirable.

Appointment at Grade 7 is dependent upon having been awarded a PhD; if this is not the case, initial appointment will be at research assistant Grade 6B (salary £31,479 – £33,194 per annum) with payment at Grade 7 being backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD thesis. If the PhD has not yet been granted, the final accepted version of the thesis must have been submitted to the degree-granting university by the start date in post.
