Tenure-track Group Leader in Environmental Microbiology

We are seeking excellent scientists with a strong track record to establish an innovative, independent research program with a clear vision to advance the field of microbiology of natural or engineered aquatic systems.

To establish a group with high international visibility, the candidate should have:

  • profound knowledge and a research portfolio in the microbiology of natural (i.e., surface water, ground water) or engineered (i.e., wastewater) aquatic systems, including but not limited to the following topics: physiology, metabolism or biochemistry of environmental microorganisms; environmental determinants or impacts of microbial metabolic and co-metabolic processes; and the role of microorganisms in pollutant dynamics or biogeochemical cycles
  • interest in the use or development of technological and computational tools currently revolutionizing biology
  • interest to collaborate in multidisciplinary research teams with the aim to improve our understanding of aquatic ecosystems and to maintain and develop a disciplinary research network with external partners
  • an interest in applied research with links to practice including engagement of relevant stakeholders

The Department of Environmental Microbiology ( offers an exciting and stimulating research environment. Excellent opportunities for collaborative research also exist with other departments, for example with the Departments of Process Engineering and Environmental Chemistry. By taking advantage of Eawag’s environment and its world-class infrastructure and facilities, the successful candidate, with the support of the Department, is expected to acquire third party funding, build up a research group and contribute to Eawag’s mandate in teaching and expert consulting. Excellent communication in English and team work skills are essential.
