The Iowa Neuroscience Institute is recruiting a tenure-track faculty member who seeks a vibrant intellectual, interdisciplinary, and collaborative environment to solve fundamental problems in brain disorders. Together, we are working to develop better treatments for people and their families who live with neurodevelopment, neurological, and psychiatric disorders.

About the institute

The University of Iowa recently dedicated substantial new investments for neuroscience—already a large community with more than 120 faculty members across five colleges and 26 departments—including the founding of the Iowa Neuroscience Institute in 2016 and the creation of a new undergraduate major in neuroscience in 2017. Since the inauguration of the Iowa Neuroscience Institute, we have already hired 16 new tenure-track faculty, 8 female and 8 male. Together with its academic medical facility, University of Iowa Health Care, the Iowa Neuroscience Institute offers extensive opportunities and support for vibrant interdepartmental collaboration with other researchers across our campus. The University of Iowa provides state-of-the-art research facilities, including the Iowa Magnetic Resonance Facility, the Central Microscopy Research Facility, the Iowa Institute of Human Genetics, the Viral Vector Core, the Genome Editing Core, the NeuroBank Core and a Neural Circuits and Behavior Core developed by the INI.

About the position

THE UNIVERSITY OF IOWA NEUROSCIENCE INSTITUTE (INI), in conjunction with the Departments of Anatomy & Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Bioengineering, Biology, Molecular Physiology & Biophysics, Neurology, Pediatric Neurology, Pharmacology, Psychiatry, Psychological & Brain Sciences and the Colleges of Medicine, Liberal Arts & Sciences, is seeking tenure-track faculty with expertise in any of the above disciplines with a focus on Neuroscience.

The institute is particularly interested in researchers working in the areas of: neural circuits and behavior; molecular and cellular neuroscience; neurogenetics and epigenetics; and modeling of neurological and psychiatric disorders in animal and cellular systems, with a focus on identifying and developing new therapeutic opportunities for patients. Salary ($100,000.00 to commensurate) is based on academic level of entry and on the applicant’s qualifications and responsibilities.


Qualifications include PhD and/or MD degree, and applicable training to support the appointment, including clinical training where appropriate. Positions are available at Assistant through full Professor ranks, in the tenure track. Applicants should have demonstrated ability in research and teaching, including high-profile publications, with clear potential for supporting an innovative and productive research program.

Candidates must have previous records consistent with appointment as a tenure-track professor. This includes a PhD or MD degree or equivalent and an outstanding record of accomplishments in research, teaching, and service.

Applicants must have a relevant doctoral degree and productive research experience focusing on topics of broad interest in neuroscience. These may include, but not be restricted to areas such as neural circuits and behavior; neurogenetics and epigenetics; and modeling of neurological and psychiatric disorders in animal and cellular systems.

Applicants will be judged on their potential to initiate and maintain a vigorous, independent research program and to teach and train students and postdoctoral fellows.

The successful candidate should have the demonstrated capacity to foster an environment in which excellence in research, teaching, and scholarship can flourish, as well as experience and interest in developing and leading research programs.

Desirable attributes include a record of innovative and effective administrative and fiscal leadership, a record of excellent interpersonal skills, demonstrated experience promoting a diverse workforce, and positive interactions with students, staff and faculty. An interest in interdisciplinary research programs is desirable.
