The French Institute for Radiation Protection and Nuclear safety is lookinf fo a scientist in system biology to integrate the Laboratory of Radiotoxicology and Experimental Radiobiology (LRTOX). This lab is part of the Research Department of Health and Biological Effects of Ionizing Radiation (SESANE) of the Health Department of IRSN, which conducts research on the effects of ionizing radiation.


The position holder will contribute to LRTOX research on the biological effects of ionizing radiation with the overarching goal to better understand the mechanisms and identify biomarkers of cancer and non-cancer (neurological, vascular, reproductive) related outcomes. Specifically, the position holder will apply systems biology approaches and expertise to integrate both current radiobiology knowledge from literature and the results of in-house designed and carried out studies to build comprehensive mechanistic models predicting radiation exposure outcomes of interest. Such models would integrate different biological levels of organization, e.g. genetic, epigenetic, transcriptomic, tissue microenvironment, etc. For this, she/he will interact with the diverse experts present at both LRTOX lab (Radiobiology and Toxicology) and the rest of the IRSN’s Health Division (Dosimetry, Epidemiology, Statistics and Chemistry). The recruited candidate will have the overall responsibility for the day-to-day supervision and management of research activities that have been approved and assigned to him/her. This includes, but is not limited to the following:

  • Supporting existing research projects as well as proposing and managing new research projects
  • Analyzing their own or team’s generated results of experiments and writing articles for publication in peer-reviewed journals, as well as research reports for internal or external customers
  • Preparing and presenting talks and poster presentations at internal and external seminars and meetings when requested and approved
  • Maintaining approved external communications with partners, collaborators, clinicians, customers and other parties with respect to research projects, results and applications
  • Supervising the day-to-day work, as well as providing technical guidance, on-the-job training and leadership for technical staff, postdoctoral fellows and graduate students
  • Producing routine administrative, progress and technical reports
  • Ensuring that all activities are carried out with due diligence relative to established Quality Assurance, applicable environmental and safety regulations and requirements (e.g. radiological), and company policies and procedures (including relevant labour contracts)
  • Providing assistance to a Laboratory Head and/or the Division Director when requested


The incumbent shall have:

  • PhD degree
  • Training in systems biology
  • Comprehensive background and experience in applying Systems Biology in one or more of the following areas: Radiobiology, Genotoxicology, Cancer Biology, Bioinformatics, Toxicology and Inflammation Biology.
  • Experience in Radiobiology and Radiotoxicology will be considered as an asset
  • Demonstrated ability to publish his/her research results as a lead author in peer-reviewed scientific literature
  • Effective verbal and communication skills to present results of his/her research as demonstrated by a record of conference and other oral presentations in both French and English
  • Demonstrated high organization skills, interpersonal skills and ability to work as a part of a multidisciplinary and dynamic team
  • Ability to adjust to work in the environment where French is the main language of communication
